The oldest restaurant in Prague. Czech beer - well-known brands, the best varieties

The Czech Republic is called the beer capital of Europe for a reason. It is here that tourists from all over the planet come to find out what the greatest achievement of the world culture of brewing is. Let's dig a little deeper into history to understand how Czech beer managed to gain such popularity.

A well-known brewery in the Czech Republic appeared in 1118 in the city of Brno. By that time, beer was brewed in every Czech house. 1842 was a defining year for the Czech foamy drink - Josef Groll created a new sort of beer in Pilsen called "Pilsner". This drink was to the taste of the whole country, and soon went beyond its borders and became popular not only in Europe, but also in the USA (1874).

Now beer is considered a national treasure of the country, a huge part of culture and history, as well as one of the main types of consumer products. Sociological surveys have shown that 35% of the Czech population visits beer restaurants from 1 to 5 times a month, and 20% of residents visit breweries up to 10 times a month. A study by the Center for Public Opinion shows that 90% of Czechs believe that beer should represent the Czech Republic abroad as a national drink.

As a rule, Czechs prefer one or two brands of beer. But tourists will be interested in tasting as many varieties as possible:

  • Pilsner, who made the Czech Republic famous;
  • Velkopopovicky Kozel, popular abroad;
  • varied Staropramen (Staropramen);
  • rich and fragrant Budweiser Budvar (Budejovicky Budvar);
  • beer from the old brewery Krusovice;
  • young drink (founded in 1991) brand Bernard (Bernard).

In the beer capital of Europe, there is sure to be a foamy drink for everyone. If you are a fan of dark beer with a pronounced aroma of malt - try porter; connoisseurs of a fragrant foamy drink will like a lager, but a lounger (also called: vychepen, ten or twelve) is a beer with a rich flavor bouquet for real gourmets.

The history of brewing in the Czech Republic spans almost 10 centuries, so beer is part of the national heritage. When you visit Prague, you will be surprised by the fact that beer is often cheaper than regular mineral water. Perhaps the reason for this is the fact that the Czechs are the world leaders in beer consumption per person. And, of course, the number of pubs, taverns and bars in Prague is countless.

Earlier in the article:"" we have already mentioned the popular establishments of the Czech capital where you can drink beer. Now we will dwell on this important issue in more detail)

It is worth noting separately the features of Czech beer. Hundreds of small breweries and huge factories operate throughout the Czech Republic, but almost all of them owe their technology to the brand Pilsner, the largest exporter of Czech beer in the world. Now the word Pilsner has become virtually a household word and means all filtered beer.

Photo: Pilsner Urquell is the most famous Czech beer brand.

Beer is usually served in Prague in two different portions: male pivo - in glasses up to a third of a liter, and velké pivo - half a liter, the most popular portion. For especially big fans, some restaurants offer portions up to one and a half liters, which are called tuplak, such portions are offered by beer restaurants U Medvidku, U Vejvodu, U Sedmi Svabu and other taverns.

The most common type of beer is dark filtered, which in turn is divided into two levels: 10% beer contains less alcohol and usually has a more subtle taste, and 12% beer, which is a classic in the Czech Republic. In the Czech Republic, beer consumption is not complete without a free meal that comes with the drink. Any self-respecting bar will definitely offer you a snack of your choice, without demanding money for it.
