Crab sticks are a man-made product. It is made from surimi - ground fish meat of white varieties or fish protein. In appearance, they resemble meat from the claws of a crab, hence the name.

Naturally, this product has nothing to do with natural crab meat. Most of the sticks sold on the domestic market are made in China and the countries of the former USSR.

There are a number of similar products made on the basis of components that are not related to marine life at all: egg or soy protein, starch, colors and flavors.

Red rectangular crab sticks can be easily unwound like string cheese. Often it is this method that cooks use if they want to cook a cold appetizer stuffed. They are added to salads as an ingredient (a budget substitute for real crab meat).

There are many options for toppings:

  • Egg, cheese, garlic, mayonnaise;
  • Shrimp, dill, melted cheese, egg, mayonnaise sauce;
  • Cod liver, walnuts, eggs, sour cream;
  • Fried mushrooms, shrimp, hard cheese, onion, egg;
  • Rice, egg, fresh cucumber, mayonnaise;
  • Rice, egg, canned pink salmon, green onions, dressing;
  • Homemade cottage cheese, dill, sour cream.

Stuffed seafood is fried even in batter. It turns out a delicious and unusual snack on the festive table.

Stuffed crab sticks

The classic of this dish is the filling of farm cottage cheese, fresh dill and homemade sour cream. As you can see, you will need a minimum set of products, but you get an unusual snack.

We take chilled sticks, carefully make an incision on the side with a fillet knife and unwind the product like a roll, pulling the edge. Do this slowly so as not to violate the integrity, otherwise stuffing will not work.

Some chefs recommend dipping the crab product in boiling water for a few seconds before use. So it will be softer and unfold without any extra effort. But after cooling, the sticks will become stiff, all moisture will go away, so it's up to you to decide what to do in this situation.

Transfer the cottage cheese to a deep container, add pre-washed and chopped dill, salt and put sour cream. Knead the mass with a fork until homogeneous.

Put the filling on the unfolded edge with a small spoon and wind the roll, slightly crushing it so that the filling is well connected with the base. The roll will increase significantly in volume.

Lay the finished sticks on a flat dish.

You can build an imitation of the tower by distributing them into several tiers. Garnish with curly parsley and fresh cucumber.

Culinary Tips

  1. When choosing a semi-finished product, focus on its general condition. The sticks should be a bright pleasant color, elastic to the touch and, if not frozen, have a seafood smell;
  2. Do not buy sticks that are kept in the refrigerator below seventeen degrees, they are frozen and will not differ in good taste properties;
  3. If you notice ice and snow in the package, it means that it has been subjected to repeated freezing and thawing. Such a product is unsuitable for food;
  4. If the date of manufacture is not clearly visible, blurred or completely erased, you do not need to buy such a product;
  5. Before putting a fresh cucumber in the filling, remove the peel from it, it is often too rough, this will only spoil the delicate texture of the dish;
  6. If you use canned pink salmon or cod liver as a filling, you do not need to drain the oil separately, mix everything with a fork and stuff.
