Rostik group. Exclusive from Rostik Group Rostik Group

In 1984, Rostislav Ordovsky-Tanaevsky Blanco, a graduate of the Venezuelan Simón Bolivar University, founder of Rostik International in Caracas and a descendant of Russian and Spanish emigrants, visited the USSR for the first time.

The innate instinct of an entrepreneur helped him to see promising areas of business in his historical homeland, and his enormous energy and creativity served as the key to the successful implementation of his plans. After 20 years, the Rostik Group corporation he founded became an example of an outstanding business history.

“I think we can proudly say that we have made a huge contribution to the development of a culture of eating out in the territory of the former Soviet Union. We were also the first to introduce the concept of franchising to the market. To date, we have created more than 13,000 jobs and are actively investing in the development of the hospitality industry.” Rostislav Ordovsky-Tanaevsky Blanco

In Moscow in 1984, Rostislav faced two everyday problems: he could not buy film for his camera and had difficulty finding a suitable place to have lunch. Returning to Venezuela, Rostislav invited Kodak to develop business in the Soviet Union. In 1987, the Focus photo store appeared on the territory of the USSR.

The first restaurant project was the Spanish Corner, opened in 1990 in Moscow near Red Square. The success of the project inspired confidence that this direction could be promising. And so it happened. In 1991, the ROSINTER company was established, which eventually became the largest restaurant holding in the segment of family restaurants in the post-Soviet space. In 1993, the first enterprise of the popular fast food chain ROSTIK'S (today ROSTIK'S-kfc) was opened.

Simultaneously with the restaurant and photography business, the corporation developed other areas: for example, in 1998, the travel business was founded - the Carlson Tourism agency, and then a group of real estate and logistics companies - the CorpEstate holding and the network of health hypermarkets Plenia. Diversification both in terms of activities and market segments allowed the corporation to develop effectively in the early 90s, survive the 1998 crisis, maintain and increase growth rates, remaining the largest player in the hospitality industry.

Today the structure of the corporation includes the following companies:

  • OJSC Rosinter Restaurants Holding - full service chain family restaurants: IL Patio, Planet Sushi, American Bar and Grill, T.G.I. Friday's, Costa Coffee
  • "Carlson Tourism" - tourism business;
  • CorpEstate - real estate and logistics;

■ We respect competitors located near our facilities. As a rule, the presence of different types of restaurants in one place gives synergy and attracts an additional flow of visitors to everyone. We prefer to place our restaurants and quick service points on the first floors of the shopping center. We often encounter ill-conceived concepts of the shopping center itself, an insufficient pool of tenants.

The sales volume of Rostik Group, which owns a chain of fast food restaurants, grew in 2003 by 40% to $100 million. According to analysts, the past year was even more successful for the company than expected, and in 2004 growth is likely to continue and even accelerate, driven by weak competition in the market and rising household incomes.

Taking advantage of the favorable situation in the public catering market, Rostik Group seeks to take as much of its share as possible in a short time, for which it is ready to sacrifice the profitability of its business. In a few years, large international fast food companies may appear in Russia, and then the opportunities for further growth of the company will end.

The Rostik Group company was founded in Venezuela in 1981, and has been present on the Russian catering market since 1990. In addition to the Rostik's fast food chain, which consists of 44 outlets, the company owns Patio Pizza restaurants of the middle price category, Planet Sushi, T.G.I. Friday’s”, etc. As of the beginning of 2004, the total number of Rostik Group outlets in Russia and the CIS countries reached 128. In 2003, 42 restaurants were opened under the company’s brand, some of which were in the Siberian region. Rostik Group President Rostislav Ordovsky-Tanaevsky Blanco told RBC Daily that Moscow, the Moscow Region and St. Petersburg remain priorities for the company. “In 2004 we will also continue development in Siberia, the Volga region and the Urals. We hope to introduce the brands Rostik's, Patio Pizza, Planet Sushi, Sibirskaya Korona and Moka Loka in Krasnoyarsk, Chelyabinsk, Barnaul, Perm and Kemerovo. For the first time, our trademarks will appear in Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Ufa, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Chelyabinsk,” he said.

The opening of a large number of outlets throughout Russia allowed Rostik Group in 2003 to repeat the record of 2002, increasing sales by 40%, and hope for an increase in dynamics in 2004. “The company ended the year better than expected. Our forecast was at the level of $93.5 mln, - Alfa-Bank analyst Alexander Svinov told RBC daily. “However, this growth is not extraordinary. During the year they opened a large number of new restaurants. Growth is likely to pick up even more in 2004, and we can expect a claimed 30% increase in growth rates.”

For the development of "Rostik Group" skillfully uses the favorable situation on the market. “Conjuncture of the fast food market is favorable throughout Russia. There are good development prospects for Rostik's in all large cities with a population of over 1 million people, and even in cities with a population of 500-700 thousand people, ”Andrey Petrakov, head of restaurant consulting at Asessor, told RBC daily. Alexander Svinov explains that the dynamics of Rostik Group reflects the increase in consumer spending of the population: if earlier in Russia it was impossible to observe the rapid development of restaurant chains, now it is possible, because with rising incomes people can afford to go to a restaurant. In addition, the public catering market, with the exception of Moscow, is not yet completely filled. “In the regions, you can open 5 times more outlets, but there will still be no real competition. In Moscow, there is a temporary imbalance - a large number of expensive restaurants and a lack of supply in the fast food sector, ”he adds. The company itself agrees with this opinion. “The Moscow restaurant market is the most saturated in Russia, but if the niche of Japanese restaurants is really getting crowded, then there is still enough room for fast-food businesses to develop, and Rostik's could well double or triple its presence in Moscow,” adds the president of Rostik Group.

True, such high growth rates of the company's turnover turn into a decrease in profitability for it, which is noted by all analysts. In addition, according to Andrey Petrakov, the specifics of an intensive development strategy lead to a number of other problems for the company. “The Rostik's restaurant chain is developing on a franchising basis, so the Rostik Group faces the problem of quality control. In addition, unlike McDonald's, Rostik's chooses places for its restaurants less clearly, they have a less responsible strategy. Finally, many Rostik’s outlets are opening in shopping centers, which makes their turnover dynamics dependent on the attendance [of these centers] by customers,” he said. However, Maxim Privezentsev, General Director of Maxpro restaurant bureau, believes that the strategy aimed at extensive growth at the expense of profitability is not specific to the fast food market, especially since the trend towards decreasing profitability is observed throughout the market. “The company is developing, hoping to achieve stable performance in a strategic perspective. If it does not grow, then someone will definitely appear nearby and absorb it,” he told RBC daily.

Apparently, Rostik Group is doing this in the hope of capturing as much market share as possible, waiting for transnational competitors to enter the market. The main competitor of Rostik's, McDonald's, is somewhat different from it in terms of the target group of consumers, which allows both companies to develop without looking back at each other. However, with the arrival of companies such as Burger King in Russia, the situation may change dramatically. “The main players, Rostik's and McDonald's, have the opportunity to develop their chains almost without interfering with each other,” notes Alexander Svinov. – Now it is impossible to speak with certainty, but good trends can attract other large chains to this market. It is possible that Burger King will start operating in Russia, although this company has not yet announced its desire to develop its business here.” Andrey Petrakov adds that in addition to McDonald's, KFC can be a real competitor to Rostik's. “So far, KFC is represented practically only in St. Petersburg, and its activities in Moscow are not so successful. But in the future we can expect its development and the emergence of a new major player in this market, especially since in 2003 some foreign companies announced their intention to come to Russia,” he said. With the arrival of real competitors on the market, which can be expected in the near future, Rostik Group's sales growth may slow down significantly.
