Nord 55 restaurant Tverskoy Boulevard.

The establishment of chef Michel Lombardi ("River" on "Red October") opened on the site of the Tassovskaya canteen on Tverskoy Boulevard. In terms of style, it's kind of like a bistro - in the sense in which it is understood, for example, in the "Brasserie Bridge", but without any reference to a specific gastronomic tradition. Such, in fact, is Lombardi himself - a typical leader of capitalist labor, who fed both Hollywood stars and Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Despite the Italian surname, he is not an Italian, but a Frenchman, who, on occasion, commemorates his Russian great-great-grandfather.
Characteristic dishes: miso soup with shrimp and noodles, spring rolls with vegetable julienne and pork in plum sauce, chicken in black bean sauce. Soup is not a modest breakfast miso with a cube of tofu and a mushroom cut in half for satiety. This is a bowl full of miso-paste broth, plenty of udon, stewed pak choi leaves and a decent amount of shrimp - a full-fledged first course, and for lunch it’s the only one at all. In spring rolls, the most important thing is the plum sauce, which makes these deep-fried tubules downright exemplary Chinese food. Before serving the chicken to the table, the waiter asks whether to carry it in a frying pan or put it on a plate - choose the second one, since the portion is huge, and it will take a long time to cool in a hot frying pan.

There are such restaurants, even unfamiliar ones, where you want to be cozy and tasty there. Walking into the foyer of Michel Lombardi's new restaurant on a weekday evening, I felt exactly that desire. Everything worked out with comfort. The interior is typically European: two small halls, light walls, a few monograms, a few mirrors, neat benches and chairs, red floor lamps, black and white photographs, a small bar, subdued light. In some details, Vienna was traced, in some Paris, there was something from Zurich and from Milan. With an almost empty hall, discomfort was not felt. Even the menu, which mixed France, Asia, Italy and all sorts of other things, did not repel anything. Moreover, the staff was cordial, met guests with a smile, with respect.

As soon as the dishes began to arrive at the table, it became clear: we would have to forget about the delicious. For me, the newly discovered one was twenty years late. This is how they cooked in the early 90s, when there was no restaurant culture in Moscow yet. But okay, if only the recipe and presentation are old-fashioned, the main problem is that the taste components of the dishes are mediocre.

For example, the “Baked Beet Salad” turned out to be bulky, clumsy and insipid. The original products were fresh, I don’t argue with that, but the cuts turned out to be too large, there was little sauce, and the mountain of empty lettuce only distracted. The “onion soup with cheese” was also bland, the broth was thin, the onions were sluggish, the toast was black and the cheese curled up into one thick lump and refused to jump into a spoon. "Duck confit" did not look like a real duck confit. She was somehow wrinkled, gray, dry. As for Wasabi Shrimps, they were not bad, ordinary, but not bad, however, it was extremely difficult to find them in the next stack of lettuce. As for desserts, “Carrot Cake” was not the best. The dough is dryish, the cream is too thick and sticky.

As I said, the service was polite and inquisitive, but I have one note. When a waiter talks about the chef, about his past and how he cooks the dishes ordered by the guest wonderfully, while the chef himself is sitting at the far table in a sweater and jeans and studying some papers, this means that he is nothing I didn’t cook for the guest, someone else cooked for the guest. In my case, this "someone" cheated.

The bottom line is this:

Alas, my wish did not come true. Today - it's just an empty hall and boring, mediocre food from the last century.
