Armenians take food seriously: they love to eat and they do it with taste. Any event or meeting of people in one way or another revolves around food, because not a single conversation is tied up on an empty stomach, and you can start talking just by offering a friend to taste something. In Armenia, and especially in Yerevan, one can find a huge variety of restaurants. Below are 10 restaurants that every city visitor should visit. And so, where to eat in Yerevan - the top ten!

Our Yard (Mer Tahe)
A visit to Armenia would not be complete without the melt-in-your-mouth traditional lahmacun, often referred to as “Armenian pizza”. Mer Taghe is a simple, intimate and cozy restaurant where the dough is always fresh and made right on the spot. It is on this thin and round dough that meat and parsley, tomato and onion are added. Lemon is served with lahmajun, which must be squeezed onto a dish before consumption. And together with tan, a drink based on matsun (Armenian yogurt), it will become an inexpensive, satisfying and tasty dish. And in Yerevan there is no better place for this than Mer Taghe.

Guests are received in beautiful halls, stylized according to ancient traditions, and all this is seasoned with live music of local groups playing folk instruments - including the famous duduk. Each floor has its own special style and music. Old Yerevan is located in a very convenient location, overlooking the Opera and Ballet building.

Tablecloths and pillows are also decorated with national ornaments, and paintings with interesting Armenian views can also be seen throughout the halls. Comfort - this word best describes the atmosphere of the place where guests can taste real Armenian cuisine. For our part, we advise you to try homemade apricot and peach vodka here. We included a visit to Yerevan Pandok in ours, and this also says a lot:

Located in the heart of Yerevan, since 1998 Dolmama restaurant has been working hard not only to revive the ancient Armenian recipes, but also to give them a new taste. A distinctive feature of this restaurant, as the name suggests, is Armenian dolma (or as they call it in Western Armenia - sarma): minced meat mixed with rice, herbs and various spices and wrapped in grape leaves. However, Dolmama decided to add a special “sharpness” to this dish by slightly changing the traditional cooking recipe: instead of minced meat, fillet is used with the addition of chili and rosemary. It tastes best when seasoned with squeezed lemon or matsun (yarmenian yogurt).

The Kavkaz team also attaches great importance to the interior of their establishment and tries, through design and photography, to give the place the look of exactly the same taverns that were in Yerevan and Tbilisi in the 19th century. Moreover, every evening the musicians perform the songs of Sayat-Nova, Jivani and Sherami in the East Maran Hall.
On the highway to the city of Ashtarak, there is also a "Caucasus" for those who are looking for interesting places outside of Yerevan. The cuisine here is the same, but in size it exceeds the Yerevan tavern.

During the 5 days that I spent there, I managed to visit some places and try something, I will write about my impressions, I hope my reviews on restaurants and cafes in Yerevan will be useful to someone.

photo from my instagram

Segafredo(Abovyan st. 36) - a pleasant coffee house, an original menu, but not in composition, but in design) You can go here for a small lunch.

Thomas Tea(Abovyan st. 22) - this is a tea house with a large selection + a small selection of cakes, quite tasty. Also a nice place, but sometimes everything is busy even on a weekday evening.

Buddha Cafe(Sayat Nova st.) - is considered an expensive place, the price tag is really not cheap, especially by Yerevan standards. Luxury magazines lie on each table, hinting at the level of the institution. Beautiful atmosphere and Asian and mixed food menu. But the place is not interesting for a tourist, it will come down to the pretentious local public.

Caucasus(Hanrapetutyan st. 72) - the best restaurant I have visited in Yerevan. A good menu, in which you can see photos of dishes, the choice is large, all Caucasian cuisine is represented. Prices are normal and I would even say low. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine cost me 600 rubles, you must admit it is inexpensive. The place is big and there are always empty seats. Be sure to try pkhali)

Kilikia(Hanrapetutyan St. 78) - a restaurant of Armenian cuisine, but an order of magnitude less menu choice than in the Caucasus, and prices are an order of magnitude more expensive. I don’t know what the food tastes like there, having booked a table for the evening, I ended up at some noisy feast of Armenians and Russians, where loud music mixed with toasts and screams of a drunken crowd forced me to leave, I can’t have dinner in such an atmosphere) I don’t know whether such an orgy is going on there every evening, I did not check this.

Artbridge Bookstore Cafe(Abovyan st. 20) - a book cafe with a European menu. I didn't like the food.

Zhingyalov hats(Teryan, 60) - be sure to visit this small cafe at least once! Only one dish is served here, but it's worth it. It is called, in fact, like a cafe - zhingyalov hats - a national Karabakh dish, it is something like a thin pita stuffed with greens. Karabakh people say that in the original, this "green mixture" should include up to 40 different herbs. Here they serve 12 herbs, but they seem to have been brought specially from Karabakh. I recommend taking another glass of pomegranate wine for this case. Unfortunately, the sign is written only in Armenian, so you will have to try to find it, I missed it once).

old village(Sayat Nova st.) - Armenian cuisine restaurant, located in the basement, I liked the design of this restaurant, they tried to make such a village national motif. I didn’t remember the food, but it seems normal, you can go in once, for a test.
