We get used to them, we protect them, because they are very comfortable and the tea in them is the most delicious. In addition, our cups are most often not just dishes, but an everyday item that expresses our taste. Therefore, designers are trying with might and main to create original cups using various shapes, materials and their imagination. You may have already seen some of the cups and mugs below in other collections, but their design is so successful that it would not be out of place to take a look at them again:

When pouring hot tea or refreshing juice into a container, people rarely think whether they are holding a cup or a mug. Not many people know that there is a fundamental difference between these concepts.

What is a mug?

It's hard to believe, but this word, in addition to the usual meaning for everyone: hollow cylindrical container for drinking, there are other definitions. According to the dictionary of V. Dahl, a mug is also a vessel made of tin with a hole and a lock for collecting alms (church mug). In addition, in ancient Rus', a cup was called a measure of liquids. This word is translated as drinking in a circle. This measure was equated to ten cups or 1.23 liters.

In the modern sense, a circle is large glass of any material(clay, glass, metal, plastic) with a large comfortable handle, used for storing and drinking hot and cold drinks. A common and useful accessory for a mug is a lid. It retains the heat of the drink and protects against the ingress of debris and foreign objects. A standard mug holds from 250 to 500 ml of liquid.

Depending on the material from which the mug is made, glass, ceramic, porcelain, aluminum, wood, plastic and iron enameled mugs are distinguished.

According to the available useful properties are: thermo mugs- are able to retain the heat of their contents for a long time; chameleon mug- changes color or shows a hidden pattern when hot liquid gets inside; blender mugs- thanks to a small built-in motor, they are able to stir their contents; non-spill mugs- intended for children.

Now manufacturers offer mugs for every taste, any size, shape and color. It all depends on the imagination and desires of the consumer.

What is a cup?

The modern cup, like many other utensils, comes from an ancient bowl. Bowls of various kinds were used in the ancient world.

The prototype of a cup is a bowl (a low bowl without a handle). It has been widely used in different cultures for serving food and drinks.

A cup is a small vessel shaped like hemisphere or rounded cone with a handle intended for the use of liquid hot dishes or drinks. The handle is often small and elegant. The volume of the cup, as a rule, does not exceed 200 ml. The exception is bouillon cups (used for pureed soups and broths with finely chopped ingredients). Their volume can reach 400 ml.

Cups are coffee, tea and broth.

Coffee cups differ depending on the drink for which they are intended, because there are many coffee drinks.

Espresso is prepared in small portions (35-40 ml) and will cool down quickly in a regular cup. Therefore, dishes for him are made of very thick high-quality porcelain. A unique shape contributes to the most complete disclosure of taste and aroma.

Demitasse cup has the shape of a truncated cone and thick walls. The traditional volume is 60-90 ml. Real demitasse can only be matte white without a pattern. Used to serve Turkish coffee and sometimes espresso.

Cappuccino cup requires larger volumes than the previous ones. Initially, it was thought that it should be exactly twice the size of an espresso cup. The average volume varies from 170 to 220 ml. As a rule, this is a coffee pair.

latte served in cups 220, 300 or 360 ml. The shape of such cups is more elongated, reminiscent of a glass. Often made of thick glass.

For Americano the cups used are the same as for espresso, but larger (200-220 ml).

Tea cups, like bouillon cups, can be of any volume and differ in the material from which they are made. It can be glass, porcelain or ceramics. The best choice here would be thick-walled porcelain. Such a cup will keep the heat of the drink for a long time.

In the UK, where tea ceremonies are considered traditional, only porcelain cups are used. Serving dishes from other, cheaper materials is considered bad form.

What do cups and mugs have in common?

  • Both are hollow vessels and are used for drinking.
  • Most of them are made of the same materials (glass, ceramics, porcelain). True, there are no wooden and metal cups, but mugs are quite common.
  • In both the mug and the cup, thick walls are preferred to keep the contents of the drink warm.

What is the difference between a mug and a cup?

  1. The main difference is the volume of the contained liquid: the mug has more of it.
  2. Shape: a mug is a cylinder, and a cup is a truncated cone or a hemisphere.
  3. The mug is more versatile. It is used for drinking both hot and cold drinks, soup or broth can be poured into it. The use of a cup is limited by its volume. It is used only for hot drinks and dishes.
  4. The cup is associated with solemnity, calmness, measuredness. Mug - with everyday life, swiftness, practicality.
  5. A saucer is usually paired with a cup. This adds to her solemnity and grace. The mug is often complemented by a lid and serves practicality and ease of use. The saucer is never attached to the mug.
  6. The handle of the mug is wide and comfortable. Can be taken with almost all fingers. The cup has a much smaller handle. Sometimes even one finger will not go through it. Cups for broths can be immediately with two handles.
  7. Cups often make up sets. Mugs are sold individually.

Both cups and mugs are useful and necessary items in every home. The mug will always be at hand. From it you can always quench your thirst with a cool drink or cheer up with aromatic coffee. A beautiful tea or coffee service will create an atmosphere of celebration and celebration. An elegant coffee cup will fill the meal with calmness and tranquility. Distinguishing dishes according to their purpose, you can systematize your life, add new colors to it.

Many times in my life I have had to deal with such a situation that even in fairly well-to-do families, assorted mugs from various sets are used to serve coffee or tea. It doesn't look as pretty as if they bought a couple of beautiful tea and coffee sets. This strange tradition, when each family member has his own mug, reminds me of Leo Tolstoy's fairy tale "Three Bears". “Who sipped in my cup?”, “Who sipped in my cup and sipped everything?”, “Who slept on my bed?” immediately pops up in my head. and so on.

Assorted mugs usually end up in our kitchen for a reason. When people do not know what to give, they most often buy some kind of photo frame, or this newest mug with a hint of originality. I calculated that there are already about fifteen donated mugs in my closet, which I don’t use, because I prefer organic services.

Even more surprising is the fact that some have beautiful sets and safely gather dust in the closet to see the light once a year on New Year's Eve.

“This is a festive service, such beautiful dishes are useless for every day,” the owners of the service say, taking out a battered mug from the same battered sideboard.

I believe that everything in life should be done with taste: dress, cook, eat, drink, travel, love. Even such little things as beautiful dishes can greatly change our worldview and make life brighter.

Types of coffee cups

Did you know that there are a lot of types of cups for coffee or tea and different cups are used to serve different drinks? Coffee cups were especially distinguished, which is logical, since coffee drinks are very diverse. The principle of choosing coffee cups for home and for coffee houses is different, since at home you can limit yourself to purchasing a set of cups with a volume of 170-200 ml, while a coffee shop will need different utensils for serving each drink.

Espresso cup

An espresso cup is the smallest coffee cup, with a volume of 35-40 ml. Sometimes espresso coffee is also served in 60-90 ml cups.

A standard espresso cup is made of high quality thick porcelain, and such material is not just a whim of an avid coffee lover. Such cups are used to better maintain the temperature, because real espresso is prepared in small portions and in any other mug it will simply cool quickly.

Espresso cups have a very high heat capacity and their unique shape enhances the flavor profile. Properly brewed coffee in such a cup is drunk very gently, provided that the mug was preheated before pouring the coffee.

Demitasse cup

Demitasse cup - a coffee cup with a volume of 60 to 90 ml (most often) made of thick-walled porcelain in the shape of an inverted truncated cone. Translated from French, the word "demitasse" can be translated as "half a cup". Demitasse cups are also suitable for serving espresso coffee as well as Turkish coffee.

Demitasse cups are actively used when serving coffee in many famous coffee shops, such as Starbucks.

Cappuccino cup

This drink requires more capacious cups, so coffee pairs (cup + saucer) with a volume of 170 to 220 ml are used to serve cappuccino. The smallest cappuccino cup with a capacity of 170 ml is also suitable for serving coffee drinks such as espresso with cream, lungo, dopio, etc.

latte cup

Latte is served in large cups or glasses with a volume of 220, 250, 300 or 360 ml.

Americano cup

An Americano coffee cup is similar to an espresso coffee cup, only larger. An Americano coffee cup is a thick-walled cup with a volume of 200-220 ml.

Frappuccino cup

Cups of the largest volume are needed for serving Frappuccino. The larger the cup, the better. As a rule, this volume ranges from 350 ml to 500 ml.

If you are a coffee lover, then you will need small-volume espresso cups for serving drinks, as well as standard coffee pairs for Americano and cappuccino. large coffee cocktails can be made in glasses.

Types of tea cups

With tea cups, things are much easier. Cups can be made from glass, porcelain, clay, or ceramic. It is best to choose tea cups made of thick-walled porcelain, as this material holds heat very well.

Tea cups can be small in volume, such cups are also called tasting cups.

The ideal tea set is medium-sized wide porcelain cups with saucers.

Dinnerware - dishes that serve the table and serve hot dishes. The history of the appearance and reincarnation of tableware has evolved over the centuries, as it is inextricably linked with the culture of eating.

The roots of the art of table setting, probably, should be sought during the Italian Renaissance, when merchants arranged magnificent feasts. Catherine de Medici, marrying the French king Henry II, took these Italian dinner traditions with her to France. But only under Louis XIV, that is, in the second half of the 17th century, the first rules for table setting and ceremonial dinners were established in France. But this was the impetus for the development of the production of tableware, and by the middle of the 18th century, no one was surprised by the abundance of factories producing porcelain and glassware.

This fashion was picked up by England, it was she who in the Victorian era (1837-1901) was destined to become the legislator and zealous champion of table setting traditions. The types of tableware have reached their peak - from chocolate forks to 8 types of salad forks. Not surprisingly, it is at this time that the highest level of tableware production in history is noted.

The current time dictates its own conditions, the modern pace of life does not allow us to devote as much time to eating as during the reign of Victoria. Table setting has become easier, and as a result, the number of tableware has also decreased. In ordinary life, we manage with a small set consisting of two or three plates, a salad bowl, a cup, a fork, a couple of spoons and a knife.

And yet, sometimes, when we celebrate some event at home, we want to set the table for real, beautifully and luxuriously, like in the good old days, when delicious dishes arranged on an exquisitely served table were an indicator of culture and inspired guests and hosts to lofty conversations. Table setting is a whole art, which we will definitely talk about in another article, but for now let's return to our topic and see what types of tableware are used now.

Also often made of metal are devices for spices and small special dishes (for example, cupronickel or silver caviar with a crystal insert). Ceramic dishes are more appropriate if you are serving the corresponding dishes of national cuisine.

A separate topic for conversation are such types of tableware as

Both the cup and mug are intended for drinks, but these vessels look completely different. As a rule, a cup has a shape close to hemispherical, and a mug has the shape of a cylinder or a truncated cone, the cup has thin walls, and the mug has thick walls. The difference between a cup and a circle is not limited to the shape, they also differ in the way they are used.

Mug

The capacity of the mug is quite large - at least 300-350 ml. There are mugs of a larger volume - half a liter or even a liter, they usually drink beer from them. The mug always has a handle that can be grasped with at least three fingers. Some mugs (especially beer mugs) come with lids.

They only drink from mugs, but never eat with a spoon. Drinks can be any - both hot and cold. You can drink everything from a mug - tea, coffee, juice, fruit drink, kvass, compote, and broth, but soups with dressing in a mug are not accepted.

Mugs are made from various materials: glass, wood, aluminum, iron.

A saucer is never attached to a mug; it is placed directly on the table. This feature, as well as a large volume, makes the use of a mug very "democratic", it is often used to quench thirst in between times. They sell mugs, usually one at a time.

Cup

Cups are more varied in size than mugs, varying in volume from 100 or even 50 ml for coffee cups to 300-400 for broth cups. But in general, cups are smaller in volume than mugs: there are neither liter cups nor mugs with a volume of 200 ml.

In most cases, the cup has a handle, just like the mug, but not as wide. There are broth cups with two handles, as well as cups without handles - bowls.

Unlike mugs, it is not customary to drink cold drinks from cups - they are intended for tea, coffee, broth, dressing soup or puree soup. If soup, broth or chocolate is served in a cup, they do not drink from the cup, but eat with a spoon.

The range of materials from which cups are made is not as wide as that of mugs: porcelain, ceramics, glass. There are no wooden or metal cups.

A saucer is attached to the cup, usually they are sold along with it. Very often, cups and saucers are sold not one at a time, but in the form of a service, which also includes other items - for example, a teapot or coffee pot, a sugar bowl.

A cup and saucer is more associated not with everyday use, but with a feast, a beautifully set table.
