How to make paper yellow and old. Three ways to age paper! We invite you to the master class

You may need to give ordinary white sheets of paper the effect of antiquity and some charm when making a special gift or congratulation. Aged paper, in fact, is sheets that look like those that are many years old. This vintage is unusual and actually very beautiful. From them you can make letters, a thematic album or an element of the interior.

How to age paper at home?

We will introduce you to the basic ways of "aging" paper.

Method number 1 "Tea aging"

Materials:

7 teaspoons of loose tea;

A glass of boiling water;

Soup plate;

Instruction:

1. Brew tea and let it stand for 15 minutes.

2. Strain the brew.

3 . Pour it into a bowl.

4. Put the paper in the tea leaves for a few minutes.

5. Lay paper out to dry.

6. When the paper is dry, go over it with a warm iron.

7. Drop some more tea on the paper.

8. Lightly burn the edges on the fire.

The paper is ready.

Method number 2 "Coffee aging"

If you are thinking about how to make the effect of old paper, then this method is one of the most effective.

Materials:

6 teaspoons of natural coffee;

1 cup boiling water;

Wide deep plate;

Instruction:

1. Crumple the paper and then flatten.

2. Pour hot water over coffee, cover and let steep.

3. Strain and let stand a little more.

4. Pour coffee into a bowl.

5. Lower the sheets there in turn for a few minutes.

6. Take out and dry the paper.

7. Iron it with a hot iron.

Method number 3 "Milk aging"

Materials:

2/3 cup milk;

Wide brush;

Instruction:

1. Trim the corners of a piece of paper, making them rounded. You can even them out a little with sandpaper and rumple them.

2 . Soak the leaf with milk on each side and wait for a while.

3. After the paper has dried, iron it so that burn marks appear.

A sheet made in this way will look like real paper from the past.

Method number 4. "Solar aging"

Materials:

Instruction:

1. Try to hang the sheets in such a way that they are constantly exposed to sunlight.

Method number 5. "Aging zalenka"

Materials:

A few drops of greenery;

Hollow-ware;

latex gloves;

Glass of water.

Instruction:

1. In a deep bowl, prepare a solution of water and a solution of brilliant green (up to 7 drops per glass of water).

2. Crumple the sheet.

3. Dip the sheet for a couple of minutes in the solution and take it out.

4. Dry the paper.

5. Iron the sheets.

Another effective way to make an old sheet of paper is to lay it wet on a rusty surface.

How to age paper with coffee?

Such material for aging paper, like coffee, is available to absolutely everyone and is probably in every home. We will introduce you to the method of aging paper using ground coffee. Be careful not to confuse with soluble.

What might we need?

50 grams of natural ground coffee;

White sheets of paper;

500 ml of water;

Hollow-ware;

Old unwanted newspapers;

Sprayer.

How to color paper?

1. Prepare the work surface. To do this, lay out the newspapers on the table in several layers.

2. Make strong coffee by simply pouring boiling water over it and stirring it.

3. When the coffee has cooled, pour it into a wide dish, such as a deep tray.

4. Dip the paper in the tray for 20 seconds, carefully remove and spread on newspapers, waiting for the paper to dry.

5. Sprinkle paper with coffee "powder".

6. Take a small mug and soak the bottom of it in the coffee solution. Put prints on paper with a mug.

Aged paper is ready!

In this video, there are several more ways to age paper:

To make an original invitation, postcard, note for a loved one, friend, or as an addition to a gift, it is not necessary to be an artist and draw elegant drawings, you can simply make high-quality aged paper. You can achieve a good result even with your own hands and without any extra effort, especially since there are many ways.

Aging tea

The effect of aged paper can be achieved using regular tea bags. To do this, pour 4 tea bags with 500 milliliters of boiling water and leave it to brew. After complete cooling, you need to remove the bags and use them to apply tea on a sheet of paper. You can also pour tea into a shallow but wide bowl (baking tray with sides) and place a leaf in it. The sheet should lie completely and not bend anywhere. To enhance the effect of attrition, you just need to rub the tea bag on the paper. After the paper is completely saturated, the remaining liquid should be removed using a paper towel or sponge. After the procedures, the sheet must be dried, for this it is placed in an oven preheated to 200 degrees for 3 minutes.

With coffee

With the help of ordinary instant or ground coffee (grounds), you can age both a regular sheet and paper with text. Printing on aged paper is quite difficult, so ready-made (with text) paper should be attached to the process.

In 250 milliliters of hot water, you need to dilute 3 teaspoons of coffee. The solution must be poured into a wide container with sides and left to cool completely. Then, for 3-4 minutes, a sheet of paper should be dipped into the resulting liquid and then dried. For the best effect, a few drops of the solution can be dripped onto a dry leaf or a small amount of coffee granules can be applied to it, after which they should be slightly blotted with a damp cloth. To simulate wrinkling, a wet sheet must be gently turned, and then straightened and dried.

In the microwave or oven

Under the influence of heat, the paper begins to darken, therefore, to age, you must first dip the sheet in water at room temperature or a solution of tea (coffee). Then you should “bake” it until the color changes (5-7 minutes) in the microwave at a low setting or 5-10 minutes in the oven at 200 degrees. After that, the paper can be ironed additionally with an iron, but even without that, the thermal effect of the oven or microwave does not deform its surface too much, so you can do without ironing in order to preserve the wrinkle that is natural for old paper.

Depending on the baking time, the color of the paper will also vary. Its distribution is quite even. As shown in the photo, the darkest color is the result of the longest thermal exposure.

With the help of fire

This method is used mainly if the paper needs to be given the appearance of a survivor in a fire. Also, this effect can be combined with the above methods and treated with fire on pre-aged coffee or tea paper. The aging process will take place with a candle, but this should be done over the sink in order to quickly extinguish the sheet in case of fire. The candle must be firmly placed in the middle of the sink and set on fire. The sheet must be led over the fire at a height of at least 10 cm. Paper cannot be held in one place for a long time, otherwise it may ignite.

Only the edges of previously aged paper can be treated with fire, this combination will add a dilapidated look to the paper.

Application of milk

To give the paper an old look with milk, you need a product with a high fat content, more precisely, the color of the paper will depend on its percentage. The sheet can be gently crumpled if desired, then straightened and applied with a brush on both sides of it with a sufficient amount of milk. You can also use a spray bottle for application. After it has been thoroughly saturated with liquid, the sheet should be placed on a flat surface to dry. After that, the paper should be ironed with an iron, and the temperature should be high. In the process of such aging, spots of light brown color will appear on the sheet.

With the help of the sun

The most natural, but rather long-term method of aging is the solar method. To do this, on hot summer days, you should put, and it is best to hang the sheets in a place where the sun will affect them all day. The first result will be visible after a few days. The advantage of this method is the uniformity of aging of the paper sheet, its integrity and less damage. Such a sheet will last longer.

Coloring

For this method, you will need brilliant green 1% (5-8 drops) or iodine. To prepare the solution, add the required amount of the selected substance to a container with 200 milliliters of cold water, the number of drops depends on the desired color (iodine does not give a brown color, as a result, you will get a slightly purple tint). The solution should be mixed, but if this is not done, there will be a chance that beautiful stains will be visible on the sheet. Pre-crumpled paper should be dipped in liquid for 1 minute or removed immediately to get streaks. Then the sheet should be laid out on a flat surface to dry. When the paper is completely dry, it must be ironed.

Similarly, coloring can be done using potassium permanganate. The color will be purple. Also, these three substances can be combined in different proportions, thereby resulting in paper of unusual shades.

When I was about to age the paper, my family bombarded me with questions.

Here are some of them: why? Why manually, if you can in Photoshop? And what are you going to do with her now?

If you still decide to start aging paper, then you don’t have such questions, because there is scrapbooking, framing and photographs, and just a lot of decorative work that is unthinkable without such paper.

So, there are many ways to age paper. Now I will talk about four of the simplest and, from my point of view, the most effective.

Tea aging.

We will need:

  1. Black leaf tea - 5 - 10 tsp (the stronger the tea leaves, the older the leaf, I took 5 spoons, for a slight yellowness).
  2. Boiling water - 250 ml.
  3. surface for drying.

Paper preparation.

I wrinkled the paper, it was possible to make only a few creases, it was possible not to wrinkle at all.

Welding.

Brew tea with boiling water and leave for 10 minutes under a closed lid. We filter. Pour into the bath.

Aging.

We lower the leaf into the tea leaves, while still young. We leave for a minute or two.

Drying.

We take out the paper from the bath and lay it out on a flat surface.

After drying, I ironed the sheet with an iron.

A few drops of tea on top of the finished sheet will give the paper an even more realistic look.

The edges can be burned with a lighter/candle. You can hold an electric stove over a hot burner, and dark spots will appear - “traces from fires” that the paper has “survived”.

REMEMBER FIRE SAFETY!

Aging with coffee solution.(my favorite way)

We will need:

  1. Natural ground coffee - 5 tsp with top.
  2. Boiling water - 200 ml.
  3. Tray, for soaking the sheet.
  4. A sheet of white paper for the printer.
  5. surface for drying.

Paper preparation.

Made the paper very wrinkled.

Welding.

Brew coffee with boiling water and leave for 10 minutes under a closed lid. We filter very carefully, we defend for several minutes so that the sediment settles. Pour into the bath.

Aging.

We lower the paper into the composition. We leave for five minutes. If soaking for too long, the paper will “fall into insanity” and “refuse to get out” of the bath in one piece.

Drying.

We take out the paper and lay it out on a flat surface.

After drying, I, again, ironed the sheet with an iron.

Now you can sit down for three hours for fortune-telling on coffee grounds.

Aging with milk.

We will need:

  1. Milk - 150 ml. (milk should be full fat, homemade is best).
  2. Tassel.
  3. A sheet of white paper for the printer.
  4. surface for drying.
  5. Iron.

Paper preparation.

I rounded the corners of the sheet with nail scissors. So that the edges do not look too neat, I “walked” along them with sandpaper, and all over the sheet, for one thing, too. We crumple or not crumple the paper. I rumpled.

Aging (1 part).

We lay out the sheet and “paint” it with milk on both sides. We give time to soak.

Drying.

Lay the sheet out on a flat surface. Luckily, the cutting board I was drying the sheets on turned out to be carved. Still wet sheet, I gently pressed the paper into the thread. After drying, the ornament will remain on the sheet.

Aging (part 2).

Now we connect a hot iron to the process. We iron until brown spots appear on the sheet, as well as perspiration on your forehead.

Aging by the sun.(The most economical way).

We will need:

  1. Sheet of white paper.
  2. A couple of sunny summer days.

Paper preparation.

We crumple or not crumple the paper. I didn't hesitate.

Aging.

We hang the paper so that light falls on it all the time.

We dance ritual dances and make sacrifices to the gods so that the rain does not drizzle.

The next method is also referred to as aging, although I would call it coloring.

Green coloring.

We will need:

1. A sheet of white paper.

2. Brilliant green, 1% alcohol solution, simply brilliant green - 5-10 drops (depending on the required initial color).

3. Cold water - 200 ml.

4. Tray, for soaking paper.

5. Surface for drying (may remain green forever).

Today we will talk about methods of "aging" paper and documents. And why at all from new, snow-white paper to make old, yellowed pages? But why: antiquity has been and will always be in fashion. And, of course, old, vintage style is in fashion now.

"Aged" paper will perfectly fit into the interior in the old style. One has only to make and “age” in this way a few letters, genealogies, etc. and hang them in suitable frames. They will look very realistic and appropriate. And if you do the same with a few books and add them to the interior?

Products made using "aged" paper look very stylish. Often you will find paper that looks pretty shabby in scrap paper. Also, aged paper is widely used in decoupage, scrapbooking and other types of arts and crafts.

Aged paper is used for creativity, for example, for a vintage gift. Agree, this is such a gift christmas mulled wine set will look much "richer" with a recipe written in cursive type, printed on aged paper with yellowed, jagged edges.

In the same way, you can age documents, newspapers or books. On aged paper, you can write wishes, invitations, recipes, print maps leading to ancient treasures, etc. These works look amazing. How to age paper at home ?

Methods for "aging" paper

There are several ways to get aged paper.

  1. Wait until the paper comes to this state in a natural way (provided that you are not in a hurry and you have several dozen free years at your disposal).
  2. Buy vintage or "aged" sheets (if you have extra money and a specialty store nearby).
  3. "Age" paper at home. It is this method that will be discussed in today's article.

But to give an antique (“aged”) look to a letter, postcard, invitation, recipe, etc. not so difficult at home, without resorting to the use of any special complex tools. There are several ways to achieve such "old times".

With coffee

We will need:

  • three teaspoons of instant coffee (you can take the cheapest);
  • the paper itself (office, not too thick cardboard or whatman paper);
  • candle;
  • sponge;
  • scissors;
  • hot water;
  • wide capacity.

Nothing supernatural, all this can be found in any home.

Prepare for work the paper that needs to be "aged". The logo, drawing or text must be applied to it with a LASER printer in advance, since it is difficult to print the text on already aged paper (the paint does not adhere well). It is better to make printouts with a margin, in case we ruin one or two.

Dilute coffee in 250 ml. hot water and pour the resulting solution into a wide container. Let it cool, dip a sheet of paper for a few minutes (depending on the quality of paper used) and dry it.

After the leaf dries, drip a few drops of the same solution on it, for a brighter effect, you can put a few granules of instant coffee on the leaf and blot them with a damp cloth. Dry the sheet again.

Blot the paper with the coffee solution again. Then we burn the edges with an electric stove or candle. We work carefully with a candle, we try not to burn the edges, but only lightly set them on fire.

When the paper is dry and only slightly damp, fold it in half and then in half again. We carefully pass the folds of paper folded four times between the cutting blades of scissors, you can also use pumice stone. If the paper still tears a little, don't worry, it will only add "age" to our product.

An already dried sheet can be scratched with a needle, and then wipe these places with the edge of burnt paper (the scratches will appear and be more visible).

Here's what we got. Who will say that quite recently it was a printout on pure white, perfectly even office paper?

With the help of tea

We will need:

  • three to four tea bags;
  • boiling water;
  • sponge;
  • paper itself.

We brew tea bags in half a liter of boiling water, leave to brew.

We take out the cooled tea bags and use them to apply tea on paper in an arbitrary way, or, as in the case of coffee, place a sheet with text in a wide bowl with tea.

You can rub the leaf with a tea bag to enhance the worn effect. After the paper is completely saturated, simply remove excess liquid with a sponge or paper towel and send the sheet to dry in the oven (a few minutes at 200 °C).

With the help of potassium permanganate

Potassium permanganate can be bought at any pharmacy, and it is inexpensive. In addition, this drug can be searched at home, it is probably at the gardener or in the home first aid kit.

We will need:

  • potassium permanganate;
  • wide dishes;
  • hot water.

Just dilute a small amount of crystals in ½ cup of cold water and stir thoroughly until the potassium permanganate crystals are completely dissolved.

Dilute this solution with hot water and pour into a saucepan.

We lower the paper into a hot solution, it instantly acquires a brown tint. The "aging" of paper in this way occurs very quickly. You can immediately take out the colored paper and send it to dry (just spread the paper on a flat absorbent surface - cardboard, newspaper, etc.). Use special tweezers or gloves so as not to paint the skin of your hands along the way.

When I was about to age the paper, my relatives bombarded me with questions. Here are some of them: why? Why manually, if you can in Photoshop? And what are you going to do with her now?

If you still decide to start aging paper, then you don’t have such questions, because there is scrapbooking, framing and photographs, and just full of decorative works that are unthinkable without such paper.

6. Rubber gloves. It is possible without them, but the manicure will not be French at all.

Paper preparation.

I crumple paper.

Solution.

Pour water into the bath, add greens, mix. You can not mix, then there is a chance to treat beautiful stains.

Aging.

We lower the paper into the composition. Leave for a minute or remove immediately in the case of streaks.

Drying.

We take out the paper and lay it out on a flat surface.

I got carried away with corrugated surfaces and laid out a sheet on a plastic cover with a cross in the middle.

After drying, I ironed the sheet with an iron.

In the same way color with potassium permanganate. Unfortunately, I didn't have it on my farm.

Carried away by the topic, I also decided to try iodine. But the result was completely unexpected - the leaf turned purple. Then I remembered something about phenolphthalein and experiments in the school chemistry room, but I immediately forgot it.

Another way to age is to place the wet sheet on a rust-prone surface.

Get very effective rusty paper. On it after that it will be possible to write letters of supplication with the addition “it will not rust after me!”.

P.S. I would be grateful for the comments - they motivate well for the next master classes 🙂 and don't forget that I'm still doing wedding photography 🙂
