Genetically modified foods benefits and harms. GMOs: good or bad? Genetically modified foods and organisms

The topic of this article is "GMOs: good or bad?". Let's try to understand this issue without prejudice. After all, it is precisely the lack of objectivity that sins today in many materials devoted to this controversial topic. Today, in many countries of the world (including Russia), the concept of GMOs has begun to be used when they talk about "products that cause tumors and mutations." From all sides, GMOs are being poured with mud for various reasons: tasteless, unsafe, threaten the food independence of our country. But is it really so scary and what is it really? Let's answer these questions.

Deciphering the concept

GMOs are genetically modified organisms, that is, modified using genetic engineering methods. This concept in a narrow sense extends to plants. In the past, various breeders, such as Michurin, achieved useful properties in plants using various tricks. These included, in particular, the grafting of cuttings of some trees onto others, or the choice for sowing seeds only with certain qualities. After that, it was necessary to wait a long time for the results, which only after a couple of generations steadfastly manifested themselves. Today, the right gene can be transferred to the right place and thus quickly get what you want. That is, GMOs are the direction of evolution in the right direction, its acceleration.

The original purpose of breeding GMOs

Several techniques can be used to create a GMO plant. The most popular today is the transgene method. The necessary gene (for example, the drought resistance gene) is isolated in pure form from the DNA strand. After that, it is introduced into the DNA of the plant to be modified.

Genes can be taken from related species. In this case, the process is called cisgenesis. Transgenesis occurs when a gene is taken from distant species.

It is about the latter that terrible stories go. Many, having learned that wheat today exists with the scorpion gene, begin to fantasize about whether those who eat it will grow claws and a tail. Numerous illiterate publications on forums and websites Today, the topic of GMOs, the benefits or harms of which are being discussed very actively, has not lost its relevance. However, this is not the only way that "specialists" who are not familiar with biochemistry and biology scare potential consumers of products containing GMOs.

Today, such products have agreed to be called everything that is genetically modified organisms or any products that contain components of these organisms. That is, GMO food will be not only genetically modified potatoes or corn, but also sausages, in which besides liver and GMO soy are added. But products made from cow meat that were fed wheat containing GMOs would not be considered such a product.

The effect of GMOs on the human body

Journalists who do not understand such topics as genetic engineering and biotechnology, but who understand the relevance and relevance of the GMO problem, launched a duck that, getting into our intestines and stomach, the cells of the products containing them are absorbed into the bloodstream and then spread through tissues and organs that cause cancerous tumors and mutations.

It should be noted that this fantastic plot is far from reality. Any food, without GMOs or with them, in the intestines and stomach breaks down under the action of intestinal enzymes, pancreatic and gastric juice secretions into components, and they are not genes at all and not even proteins. These are amino acids, triglycerides, simple sugars and fatty acids. All this in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract is then absorbed into the bloodstream, after which it is spent for various purposes: to obtain energy (sugar), as a building material (amino acids), for energy reserves (fats).

For example, if you take a genetically modified organism (say, an ugly apple that has become like a cucumber), then it will be quietly chewed and decomposed into its component parts in the same way as any other non-GMO.

Other GMO horror stories

Another story, no less chilling, concerns the fact that transgenes are built into it, which leads to terrible consequences like infertility and cancer. For the first time in 2012, the French wrote about cancer in mice that were given genetically modified grain. In fact, Gilles-Eric Séralini, the director of the experiment, made a sample of 200 Sprague-Dawley rats. Of these, a third were fed GM corn grains, another third were fed herbicide-treated GM corn, and the last third were fed regular grains. As a result, female rats that ate genetically modified organisms (GMOs) gave tumor growth of 80% within two years. Males, on the other hand, developed kidney and liver pathologies on such a diet. Characteristically, a third of the animals on a normal diet also died from various tumors. This line of rats is generally prone to the sudden appearance of tumors, not associated with the nature of nutrition. Therefore, the purity of the experiment can be considered doubtful, and it was recognized as untenable and unscientific.

Similar surveys were carried out earlier, in 2005, in our country. GMOs in Russia were studied by the biologist Ermakova. She presented a report at a conference in Germany on the high mortality of mice fed GMO soybeans. The statement, confirmed in a scientific experiment, then began to spread around the world, bringing young mothers to hysteria. After all, they had to feed their babies with artificial mixtures. And they used GMO soybeans. The five experts of Nature Biotechnology further agreed that the results of the Russian experiment were ambiguous, and their validity was not recognized.

I would like to add that even if a piece of foreign DNA ends up in the human bloodstream, this genetic information will not be integrated into the body in any way and will not lead to anything. Of course, in nature there are cases of integrating pieces of the genome into a foreign organism. In particular, some bacteria thus spoil the genetics of flies. However, such phenomena have not been described in higher animals. In addition, there is more than enough genetic information in non-GMO products. And if they have not been integrated into the human genetic material so far, then you can continue to calmly eat everything that the body absorbs, including those containing GMOs.

Benefit or harm?

"Monsanto", an American company, already in 1982 brought to the market genetically modified products: soybeans and cotton. She also owns the authorship of the Roundup herbicide, which kills all vegetation, with the exception of genetically modified ones.

In 1996, when Monsanto's products were launched on the market, competing corporations launched a massive revenue rescue campaign to curb the circulation of GMO foods. Arpad Pusztai, a British scientist, was the first to be noted in the persecution. He fed GMO potatoes to rats. True, later the experts smashed all the calculations of this scientist to smithereens.

Potential harm for Russians from GMO products

Nobody hides the fact that on the lands sown with GMO-grain lands, nothing else grows except for themselves. This is due to the fact that varieties of cotton or soybeans that are resistant to herbicides do not stain with them. Thus, they can be sprayed, achieving the extinction of all other vegetation.

Glyphosphate is the most commonly used herbicide. It is actually sprayed even before the maturation of plants and quickly decomposes in them, not remaining in the soil. However, resistant GMO plants allow it to be used in huge quantities, which increases the risk of glyphosphate accumulation in GMO plants. This herbicide is also known to cause bone growth and obesity. And in Latin America and the United States, there are a bit too many people who are overweight.

Many GMO seeds are designed for just one sowing. That is, what will grow out of them will not give offspring. Most likely, this is a commercial ploy, since in this way the sale of GMO seeds increases. Modified plants that produce next generations exist just fine.

Since artificial gene mutations (for example, in soybeans or potatoes) can increase the allergenic properties of products, it is often said that GMOs are powerful allergens. But devoid of the usual proteins, some varieties of peanuts do not cause allergies even in those who suffered from it before for this particular product.

Due to their characteristics, they can reduce the number of other varieties of their species. If conventional wheat and GMO wheat are planted in two adjacent plots, there is a risk that the modified one will replace the common one, pollinating it. However, hardly anyone would let them grow side by side.

By abandoning its own seed funds and using only GMO seeds, especially disposable ones, the state will eventually become food dependent on the firms that hold the seed fund.

Conferences with the participation of Rospotrebnadzor

After horror stories and tales about GMO products were repeatedly replicated in all the media, Rospotrebnadzor took part in many conferences on this issue. At a conference in Italy, held in March 2014, his delegation participated in technical consultations on the low content of genetically modified organisms in Russia's trade turnover. Today, therefore, a course has been adopted for the almost complete exclusion of such products from the food market of our country. The use of GMO plants in agriculture was also delayed, although the use of GMO seeds was planned to begin as early as 2013 (government decree of September 23, 2013).

Barcode

The Ministry of Education and Science went even further. It has proposed the use of a barcode to replace the Non-GMO label in Russia. It should contain all information about the genetic modification contained in the product or about its absence. A good undertaking, but without a special device it will be impossible to read this barcode.

Genetically modified foods and the law

GMOs are regulated by law in some states. In Europe, for example, their content in products is not allowed more than 0.9%, in Japan - 9%, in the USA - 10%. In our country, products in which the GMO content exceeds 0.9% are subject to mandatory labeling. Businesses violating these laws face sanctions, up to and including termination of operations.

Conclusion

The conclusion from all this can be drawn as follows: the problem of GMOs (benefit or harm from the use of products containing them) is clearly inflated today. The real consequences of the long-term use of such products are unknown. To date, no authoritative scientific experiments have been conducted on this issue.

Much has been written about GMOs. Negative and positive. But I was touched by this phrase, read on the Internet: “There are no reliable methods for determining the consequences of the spread of GMOs and their products for nature and humans. Many of the negative effects of GMOs will only show up over generations.” This is a quote from a report that was written for Vladimir Putin four years ago. It was prepared by the committee of the Federation Council on agrarian and food policy.

So...

The impact on plant genetics is the same impact on nature, only more profound than the impact on the environment.
The use of such products in food cannot carry an improvement in the genetics of the consumer of this product. Simply because the current knowledge of genetics is only destructive, like that of small children who love to poke around in complex toys. As a small child can take apart an alarm clock and 'study' it with interest, but assemble, and even more so improve, he can only 'put it in a bag'.
The idea of the danger of GMOs by ordinary citizens is blunted. Most people do not think about it at all: some due to lack of attention to this topic, and some due to poor awareness.
It is important to understand that for those people who think about their descendants, it is useful to exclude all GMO products from the diet ... out of harm's way ... Take care of your children.
I think today it is no longer a secret to anyone that genetically modified foods are dangerous to the health of people and all living organisms on the planet. They have a particularly negative effect on the immune and genitourinary systems. The immune system is responsible for resistance to pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and the genitourinary system is responsible for the continuation of the Exclamation genus.
The influence of GMOs has not yet been fully studied, but there is a danger that they can lead to the complete death of all living organisms on the planet.
Alien DNA, entering the human body with food, is absorbed from the intestines into the blood, and from there it is able to penetrate into any cell of the body and change (mutate) its DNA. In addition, according to research data, the transgene has a strong resistance to antibiotics.

Honeycan be collected from genetically modified plants.

There is a high frequency of information that bees cannot pollinate genetically modified buckwheat. So, there is one.

Rice.In general, it is better to buy not anonymous varieties of plant products, but quite specific ones. For example, Basmati rice. There is a high probability that in this case the product will not be GMO.

Anonymous rice, as well as Chinese or Taiwanese, is most likely transgenic.

Russia is one of the main importers of this product from China. However, according to environmentalists, the Chinese have been producing GM rice unofficially and exporting it for two years now.

The fact that genetically modified rice is illegally grown in China was reported by environmentalists in April. “In the spring of 2005, Greenpeace took samples of rice obtained from Chinese suppliers, farmers and millers for genetic testing at the German Genescan laboratory,” Greenpeace Russia spokeswoman Maya Kolikova told NI. – It turned out that more than 2/3 of the samples (19 out of 25) were genetically modified.

When interviewing farmers and grain suppliers from China, we found out that for more than two years, transgenic rice has been illegally grown and actively sold both domestically and abroad.”

The situation, according to environmentalists, is aggravated by the fact that the Chinese government is considering the possibility of legalizing the industrial production of GM rice. The Greens believe that the Russians will suffer the most from the actions of the Chinese authorities - deliveries of the product from this country account for more than 60% of all our rice imports.

However, in this case there are not only minuses, but also pluses. Indeed, until now, rice supplied to Russia was formally considered unmodified, and no checks were made for the content of GMI in it. Therefore, no one can say how many transgenes we have already eaten and will eat again. If the consumer has information about where the rice comes from, he will be able to decide for himself whether to buy this product or not.

Environmentalists, however, see the problem not so much in the cereal itself, which can really be abandoned, but in the distribution of products with the addition of rice flour, including many children's products - milk formulas and cereals, noodles, semi-finished products. Manufacturers, as a rule, do not indicate the country where the ingredients come from.

I would like to point out that "Indica", a term found on rice packs, is not the original name of any variety. It just means long grain rice. It may also be from China.

Attention! Signs of transgenic fruits and vegetables.

Is it possible to distinguish modified fruits and vegetables from natural ones?

Too clean, little different from each other potato tubers or perfectly shaped tomatoes - a reason to think. After all, a sure sign of natural natural products is the presence in the total mass of “eaten” by insects and rotten specimens. GM foods are never eaten by insects! If you cut a natural tomato or strawberry, they will immediately give juice, unnatural ones retain their shape.

The most famous products containing GM ingredients:

(according to Greenpeace)

1. Snickers chocolate bars

2. Pepsi

3. Maggi spices

4 Pringles

Vegetable stalls are littered"Volgograd" tomatoesorami like twins similar to Turkish ones. It turns out that in Volgograd for several years only imported "plastic" varieties without taste and smell have been grown on a mass scale.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they turn out to be GMOs. I stopped buying tomatoes of these varieties, and I rarely bought them before.

From the article by E. Yakusheva “What are transgenic products?”:

Now 90% of transgenic food exports are corn and soy. Popcorn, which is sold everywhere on the streets, is 100% made from GM corn, and is still not labeled accordingly. Soy products from North America or Argentina are 80% GM products.

GM foods are attractive to retailers. For example, genetically modified vegetables and fruits are 4-5 times cheaper than their natural counterparts.

From the book of Liniza Zhuvanovna Zhalpanova:

"Foods That Are Killing You":

Transgenic products are purchased by Russia in other countries with the permission of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation. According to statistics, about 70% of imported products are made from genetically modified raw materials. Such products include: soy products, flour, chocolate, chocolate bars, wine, baby food, milk powder, milk, kefir, yogurt, cottage cheese, carbonated drinks, canned corn and tomatoes, corn oil, biscuits, starch, soy protein, soy oil, soy sauce, lecithin, cottonseed oil, syrups, tomato sauces, coffee and coffee drinks, popcorn, breakfast cereals, etc.

It is assumed that part of imported beer also contains genetically modified molecules taken over by the modified yeast drink.

According to the National Association for Genetic Safety, about 1/3 of all products on the Russian market contain genetically modified components.

Greenpeace handbook "How to avoid the use of products with genetically modified ingredients (GM products)?"

You can from here, from the Greenpeace website

The directory contains lists of food enterprises divided into three categories (green, orange and red lists) according to the criterion of the presence of GM components in products.

The New Year's menu often includes canned store-bought vegetables. But canned corn and green peas highly undesirable. They are GMO.

According to a month and a half study, our food is simply crammed with genetically modified organisms. Moreover, the food is the most popular in our area - sausages, dumplings, dry soups, canned vegetables, chocolates.

Ecologists (Greenpeace and the All-Ukrainian Ecological League) categorically include products of the most famous brands in this list - Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, Gallina Blanka, Knorr, Lipton, Bonduel. For a complete list of companies that have confirmed that their products may contain GM ingredients or have not denied their use, see .

“The results of the study showed that 18 out of 42 randomly selected foods contained genetically modified soybeans exceeded 3 percent,” said Mikhail Mukharovskiy, General Director of Ukrmetrteststandart. “Nine of them didn’t list the presence of soy protein at all.”

bonduel, thus blacklisted!

I understand that the accuracy of what is included in the list is not guaranteed, as the sources of information may be questionable. But otherwise, I have practically no way to keep such a list at all.

Orchard Puree Rich- Genetically modified foods.

By the way, the very first genetically modified product on the market is food banana, and any (to increase productivity, it has, roughly speaking, a duplicated set of chromosomes).

If about banana: artificially induced polyploidy is also a form of genetic modification (because the chromosome set becomes larger compared to the original organism), most importantly, cheap and angry. But journalists have not yet learned how to scare people with it.

Firm "Mistral", probably deliberately does not mark on the packs the country of growth of those cereals and legumes that are packaged in them. The fact is that she "lit up" in the sale of American crops, which, most likely, are genetically modified. Not labeled "Basmati Rice" either. Unfortunately, as I only found out today, it could be transgenic with a high degree of probability. From the book Seeds of Destruction. The Hidden Underlying of Genetic Manipulation, by William F. Engdahl:

RiceTech, a Texas biotechnology company, has decided that it will receive payments for a patent for basmati rice, a variation that has been a daily staple in India, Pakistan, and Asia for thousands of years. In 1998, RiceTech patented genetically modified Basmati rice, and thanks to US laws prohibiting the labeling of genetic products, RiceTech was able to sell it legally, labeling it as regular Basmati rice. RiceTech was found to have taken possession of precious Basmati seeds through dubious means, which had been deposited with the Rockefeller Foundation's International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines (IRRI). (10)

In the name of "security," IRRI duplicated a priceless collection of rice seeds from the Philippines and stored it in a seed bank in Fort Collins, Colorado, with the very dubious promise that the seeds would be kept as a safe seed stock for rice farmers. The IRRI convinced the farmers that it would serve their own security to provide their priceless finds in rice seed varieties to the IRRI.

In Colorado, far from the Philippines, MNIIR donated valuable seeds (without which RiceTech might not have made its patented genetic modifications) to RiceTech researchers, who immediately patented everything that was possible. They knew it was highly illegal: Even in Texas, rice researchers know that Basmati rice doesn't usually grow in the dusty plains around Texas' Crawford. (eleven)

RiceTek, in collusion with MNIIR, stole the seeds for its patent. In addition, according to the carefully crafted rules set by the Rockefeller Foundation's IRRI, although genebank seeds cannot be patented, any man-made improved variation based on them can be patented.

Variety "Jasmine" also has a GM modification.

From the article “Transgenic Senior Tomato and Dolly the Sheep…”:

You can delay the ripening of already harvested fruits by placing them in special conditions. With the help of carbon dioxide, the action of ethylene released by the fruits is blocked. These properties are manipulated by merchants carrying bananas, citrus fruits, and vegetables- and tomatoes and in particular. They are harvested green, and on the way they are treated with ethylene, which causes artificial maturation. Such fruits and vegetables lose their taste, ripen unevenly. And it's easy to verify this. For example, the tomatoes we buy on the market are red on the outside, but white on the inside. The delay in ripening is also connected with the fact that basically those tomatoes that we sell are imported from Turkey, and they are all transgenic. Even on the boxes in which they are packed, it is written: TRANSGEN.

Additives based on GM components:

Riboflavin (B2)otherwise known as E 101 and E 101A, made from GM microorganisms, approved for sale in a number of countries. It is added in cereals, soft drinks, baby food and weight loss products.Caramel(E 150) and xanthan (E 415) can be made from grain.

Lecithin (E 322) is made from soythat can be genetically modified. Such soy uses, in particular, company Nesltein its chocolate, baby food and other products.Other additives that may contain GM components: E 153, E 160 d, E 161 c, E 308-9, E-471, E 472a, E 473, E 475, E 476 b, E 477, E479 a, E 570, E 572, E 573, E 620, E 621, E 622, E 633, E 624, E 625.

I emphasize that food additives for any purpose (technological, to “improve” consumer qualities) can be included, among other things, in dietary supplement. Therefore, it is important to know which of the food additives are prohibited or dangerous.

I saw how it works dairy production. Only milk after that is not very desirable to drink.

And only raw cow's milk can be consumed. You can make yogurt from the store, and not from anyone, but preferably from the one on which it is written that it is made from natural (whole) cow's milk (its fat content is usually indicated as 3.4-6%). Drinking such milk in its pure form is not worth it, because it is pasteurized and if you drink it regularly, your joints will start to hurt after a while - most likely due to the deposition of inorganic calcium in them, which appears during pasteurization (passes from an organically bound form to an inorganic one). But you can make yogurt out of it - it turns out quite well and does not cause problems.

But any milk normalized for fat content is a real poison. And even yogurt from such milk turns out to be unimportant, except that from milk with a fat content of no more than 1% - lactobacilli at the very least cope with such concentrations of modified milk fat.

note how carefully products for children are screened out - everywhere there are GMOs, not there, and if your child does not eat yogurt, then he eats Nesquik or cereal or mashed potatoes. And one way or another, but GMO gets
into his body. In supermarkets, this is the situation now: absolutely all products are labeled ''GMO-free''. We read the composition on the label: modified soy, modified starch, and so on.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been given new properties by introducing foreign genes into the gene code.

GMOs are divided into the following types:
- genetically modified microorganisms (GMM);
- genetically modified animals (GMF);
- genetically modified plants (GMP).

Every animal and plant has thousands of different characteristics. For each trait, a specific gene is responsible, which represents a small segment of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule. If you remove the gene responsible for the appearance of some trait, then the trait itself will disappear, and if you introduce a new gene, then a new quality will appear in an animal or plant.

Genetically modified organisms are created by the methods of genetic engineering - a science that allows you to introduce a DNA fragment from any other organism into the genome of a microorganism, animal or plant in order to give it certain properties. For example, to breed pigs with lean meat, they inserted the spinach gene; to breed a frost-resistant tomato, the arctic flounder gene was inserted into its genes; to breed pest-resistant rice, a human liver gene was added to its genes, and to breed drought-resistant wheat varieties, scorpion genes were inserted into it.

An important difference between genetically modified organisms and natural ones is that they are absolutely sterile. That is, the seeds of such plants do not germinate, and animals do not give offspring. The introduction of alien genes of some species or classes into others leads to a genetic failure, blocking the reproduction processes. This is a protective mechanism for the conservation of species, a protest of nature against interference with its laws.

Currently, about 7 billion people live on Earth. According to scientists' forecasts, by 2050 the population may increase to 9-11 billion. One of the main problems that mankind has already faced is the lack of food. In this regard, the most productive biotechnologies are being introduced into agriculture. One of them is genetic engineering, with the help of which genetically modified products are created.

HISTORY OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS

Based on the development of biological weapons in 1983, the world's first genetically modified plant was grown in the United States. And ten years later, without proper testing for human safety, the first genetically modified foods appeared on the world food market. A global uncontrolled experiment on humanity has begun.

In China, in 1992, they began to grow tobacco, which was "not afraid" of harmful insects. In 1994, tomatoes appeared that did not deteriorate during transportation, and could also lie unripe for months at a temperature of 12 degrees. But as soon as they are placed in heat, they become ripe in a few hours. Further, genetically modified products began to appear one after another. Genetically modified soybeans have replaced common soybeans, and genetically modified corn has appeared. A type of potato resistant to the Colorado potato beetle has been developed.

By the end of 2013, 2,833 permits had been issued for the use of genetically modified products in 36 countries that regulate the use of GM crops, of which 1,321 were for food and 918 for livestock feed. In total, 27 genetically modified crops (336 varieties) were allowed on the market, the main ones being: soybeans, corn, cotton, and potatoes.

METHODS FOR OBTAINING GENETICALLY MODIFIED PRODUCTS

The task that must be solved when creating a transgenic plant is to obtain an organism with such genes that it is not supposed to by nature. To do this, it is necessary to isolate the desired gene from someone else's DNA and integrate it into the DNA molecule of this plant. There are several fairly widespread methods for introducing foreign DNA into the plant genome.

Method for obtaining genetically modified products No. 1

The bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens has the ability to insert sections of its DNA into plants, after which its affected cells begin to divide very quickly, forming a tumor. First, a strain of this bacterium is obtained that does not cause tumors, but is not deprived of the ability to introduce its DNA into the cell. Next, the desired gene was cloned into Agrobacterium tumefaciens and then the plant was infected with this bacterium. After that, the infected plant cells acquired the desired properties, and now it is not a problem to grow a whole plant from one of its cells.

Method for obtaining genetically modified products No. 2

According to this method, plant cells are bombarded with special very small tungsten bullets containing DNA. Such a bullet, with some probability, can correctly transfer the genetic material to the cell, as a result of which the plant acquires new properties. And the bullet itself, due to its microscopic size, does not interfere with the normal development of the cell.

Method for obtaining genetically modified products No. 3

Cells pre-treated with special reagents that destroy the thick cell wall are placed in a solution containing DNA and substances that facilitate its penetration into the cell. After that, a whole plant was grown from one cell.

All new technologies are the object of close attention of scientists around the world. This is due to the fact that the opinions of scientists about the safety of genetically modified foods differ.

PROPERTIES OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED PLANTS

Genetically modified plants currently have the following properties:
- higher productivity;
- give several harvests per year (for example, in Russia there are remontant varieties of strawberries that give two harvests per summer);
- resistance to insects (for example, developments are underway in Russia aimed at obtaining varieties of potatoes, the leaves of which are acutely toxic to the Colorado potato beetle and its larvae);
- resistant to adverse climatic conditions (drought-resistant transgenic plants with the scorpion gene in their genome have been obtained);
- are capable of synthesizing some proteins of animal origin (for example, a variety of tobacco was obtained in China that synthesizes human lactoferrin);
- resistance to herbicides;
- resistance to viruses;
- resistance to fungi.
- resistance to salts and aluminum (methods of genetic modification managed to obtain rapeseed that carries the ion transporter gene from Arabidopsis, which makes it resistant to salinity by sodium chloride.

Thus, the creation of genetically modified plants allows solving a whole range of problems, both agrotechnical and food, technological, pharmacological, etc. In addition, pesticides and other types of pesticides that disrupted the natural balance in local ecosystems and caused irreparable damage to the environment are disappearing into oblivion.

The benefits of genetically modified foods

There is not a single confirmed scientific study indicating the risk of using permitted genetically modified products today. There are benefits to genetically modified foods. For example, they contain fewer chemicals than their natural counterparts. Some genetically modified plants destroy herbicides themselves - due to the content of a special enzyme. And all products obtained from genetically modified plants are subject to mandatory tests for biological and food safety.

Genetically modified foods are more resistant to all kinds of viruses and bacteria. They keep longer.

The goals of genetic technology applied to animals are usually to accelerate their growth and increase their mass. Cows with increased fat content in milk and salmon have been obtained, which grow very quickly and do not need to migrate from sea water to fresh water.

Differences of genetically modified products:
Tomatoes - external glossy flawless look and endless shelf life.
Potato - resistance to pests and increased yield.
Bananas - medicinal properties (produce a vaccine against polio).
Bread with the addition of genetically modified enzymes does not go stale for a long time.
Tobacco becomes resistant to pesticides.

Proponents of genetically modified foods argue that genetic engineering will save the growing population of the Earth from starvation.

Harm of genetically modified foods

In many countries, there are percentage bans on the use of genetically modified products, for example: in Europe, the norm of GMO content in a product is no more than 0.9%, in Japan - no more than 5%, and in the USA - 10%. In almost all countries of the world, product labeling for the content of GMOs is mandatory. In Russia, there is also a law that requires the product to be labeled with a GMO sign if their content exceeds 0.9%.

In the USA, 70% of the population suffers from allergies, in Russia 30%, and many scientists believe that this is precisely because of genetically modified foods.

Genetically modified foods greatly lower the immune system and cause metabolic disorders. They also cause disruption of the gastric mucosa.

Genetically modified foods can cause cancer, this happens if the cells in the intestine begin to mutate.

Genetically modified products contribute to the emergence of resistance of pathogenic human microflora to antibiotics. When obtaining GMOs, marker genes of resistance to antibiotics are still used, which can pass into the intestinal microflora, which has been shown in relevant experiments, and this, in turn, can lead to medical problems - the inability to cure many diseases.

Genetically modified foods are the cause of health problems associated with the accumulation of herbicides in the body. Most of the known genetically modified plants are not killed by the massive use of agricultural chemicals and can accumulate them.

Genetically modified foods cause a new disease - morgelon. Morgelon is a disease characterized by the appearance under the skin of a person of multi-colored threads a few millimeters long, which are formations from agrobacteria. A patient with morgelon experiences unbearable itching and becomes covered with non-healing wounds.

In the organisms of people who consume genetically modified foods, irreversible changes occur, leading to complete sterility. Genetic engineering is a crude intervention in the most complex genetic mechanisms. It gave rise to disturbances in the harmony of the DNA of plants, animals and people, from which nature has an automatic remedy - infertility.

Cancer, infertility, allergies and other diseases have become tragically widespread throughout the world in recent years, and many experts attribute this to genetically modified foods. Many scientists directly say that these are weapons of mass destruction.

GMOs in food

According to consumer organizations, there are now 52 products on the Russian market that contain more than 5 percent of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), but are not labeled. In total, more than 120 names (brands) of genetically modified products are registered in Russia, according to voluntary registration data and a special register of products imported from abroad.

Of the genetically modified foods, soybeans are the most widespread in Russia. It is often added to sausages, sausages, sour cream, milk, other dairy products, sweets, confectionery, infant formula, and even bread. Any soy contains phytoestrogen (female sex hormone of plant origin), which negatively affects the reproductive function and the human brain. Even ordinary soy is not recommended for an adult to eat more than 30 grams per day, and children are not recommended to use it at all.

In cheap meat processing products, the content of genetically modified soybeans can reach 70 - 90%. It is also likely to be found in chicken and unprocessed meats, especially frozen ones, because. before freezing, solutions containing gm-soy are often added to them using syringes, which increase the weight of the product. 40% of all meat in Russia is supplied from abroad, and this, as a rule, is the meat of livestock that is fed with GM soy, which means that it also contains GMOs.

Other GM foods on the market include tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, carrots and eggplants. As a rule, they are distinguished by an ideal presentation, the ability to be stored for a long time and a strange taste; for example, um- strawberries are not as sweet as natural ones. GM potatoes, on the contrary, are not able to be stored for a long time and rot after 3-4 months of storage. Therefore, it is used in the production of chips and starch, which is added to many products.

There are also such genetically modified foods as zucchini and squash caviar. Comes across gm-sugar beet and sugar made from it. There are also imported GM onions (onions, shallots, leeks) and imported GM rice.

Many varieties of dried fruit, including raisins and dates, can be coated with soybean oil. Give preference to dried fruits, which do not contain vegetable oil.

Recommendations on how to reduce the consumption of genetically modified foods

Due to the weak state control over the quality of products and the lack of labeling "contains GMOs", it is very difficult to exclude genetically modified foods from the diet today, but you can minimize them if you follow the following tips.

Avoid meat products: sausages, sausages, sausages, etc. It is better to eat whole herbivore meat, preferring domestically produced beef or lamb - it is easily distinguished by the brighter color of the meat and finer fibers.

Domestic eggs and chickens are more useful (the difference between domestic chicken is tough meat, hard bone that can only be broken with a hammer).

Often, sour cream manufacturers replace animal protein with soy protein in it. To determine a fake, you need to dissolve a teaspoon of sour cream in a glass of boiling water: the fake will precipitate, and the real one will completely dissolve.

It is necessary to eat seasonal plant products and better domestic. It is better to buy these seasonal products not in supermarkets (where they can be imported), but in the markets and from the villagers. And it is even better to grow on a personal plot or summer cottage.

Don't buy food out of season. If you buy, for example, strawberries or tomatoes in the winter, the likelihood that they will be genetically modified is very high.

The fewer stages of industrial processing a product has gone through, the more likely it is that it does not contain GMOs. Choose whole, unprocessed foods.

Don't eat cooked breakfasts. GMOs can be contained in them in the form of corn flakes, as well as in the form of supplements and vitamins obtained with their use.

Do not eat fast food, almost always there can be products with GMOs and other harmful substances.

Genetically modified foods tend to have a longer shelf life.

Read food labels and avoid soy-based ingredients such as soy flour, tofu, soybean oil. Buy products that say "100% organic".

The numbers glued on fruits and vegetables indicate:
- 4-digit number indicates a regular product, not genetically modified;
- if a 5-digit number starts with the number 8, then you have a genetically modified product;
- if it is a 5-digit number that starts with the number 9, it is an organic product.

To improve health, it is advisable to use Bio Resurse mushroom extracts. These extracts are a brilliant invention of the outstanding Russian scientist Nikolai Viktorovich Levashov. Thanks to the generator he developed, which is constantly turned on when growing mushrooms, Bio Resurse extracts have a strong ability to cleanse the body of various harmful substances, both chemically active (slags, toxins, dead cells, toxic substances, etc.) and biologically active ( pathogenic bacteria, viruses and bacteriophages, foreign genes and plasmids, etc.). These extracts also help to strengthen the immune system and help get rid of various health problems.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are foodstuffs, as well as living organisms created with the help of genetic engineering. Gene modification technologies are widely used in agriculture. Plants with GMOs have increased yields and are resistant to pests.

In Russia, the production of GMOs is currently prohibited. However, the import of food products that contain genetically modified components is allowed. Mostly modified soybeans, corn, potatoes and beets from the USA are brought to Russia. America occupies a leading position in both the production and consumption of GMOs. So, up to 80% of food in the US contains GMOs. According to the National Association for Genetic Safety, about 30–40% of food products on the Russian food market contain GMOs. Over the past 3 years, the association has discovered GMOs in the products of companies such as Nestle, Mikoyan, Campomos and others.

In our country, a significant negative effect of the influence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on the biological and physiological parameters of mammals has recently been confirmed.

On April 14, specialists from the National Association for Genetic Safety (NAGB) at the RIA Novosti press club presented the results of an independent study on the effect of feed containing components of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on the biological and physiological parameters of mammals.

The results of a study conducted by the OAGB together with the Institute of Ecology and Evolution named after. A.N. Severtsov RAS in the period 2008-2010, indicate a significant negative impact of feed containing GMOs on the reproductive functions and health of laboratory animals.

“Animals (receiving GMOs) were found to have a developmental and growth retardation, a violation of the sex ratio in litters with an increase in the proportion of females, a decrease in the number of cubs in the litter, up to their complete absence in the second generation,” said the Deputy Director of the Institute of Economics and Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, d.b. n. Aleksey Surov, - A significant decrease in the reproductive abilities of males was also noted.

“The results of our study confirmed the data of those European scientists who stated about the negative health effects arising from the use of GMOs in the food of laboratory animals,” says Alexander Baranov, President of the OAGB, “We used soybean meal, which is widely used in Russia for fattening agricultural breeds . Soybean line 40-3-2, contained in the meal, is allowed in our country for human consumption as well.”

During the press conference, OAGB specialists announced the need for a new series of experiments in order to once again verify the conclusions about the dangers of GMOs on human health. The OAGB came up with a proposal to introduce a temporary moratorium in Russia on 17 permitted lines of GMOs until they are fully tested for biosafety.

Recall that in Russia the use of 17 types of genetically modified lines (GMOs) of five varieties of cultivated plants is allowed: these are soybeans, corn, potatoes, rice and sugar beets. For example, more than 90 percent of all soybeans produced in the world are genetically modified. Genetically modified soybeans and their by-products are widely used in the production of a wide range of human and animal feed products.

The experimental study was carried out on a laboratory population of Campbell's hamsters (Рhodopus carbelli), chosen due to the fact that they have a rapid generational change, which makes it possible to track long-term effects. The main negative fact of the influence of GMO feed, which was discovered during the study, according to the President of the OAGB Alexander Baranov, is the "prohibition on reproduction", as a result of which it was not possible to obtain the third generation of individuals.

In Russia at the moment there are about 5 million infertile couples. According to the speakers, if the negative impact of GMOs on human reproductive abilities is confirmed, there is a risk of a serious deterioration in the demographic situation in Russia.

The director of the OAGB, Elena Sharoikina, in her comments noted that in the recently signed by the President of Russia D.A. Medvedev "Doctrine of Food Security of the Russian Federation" stated the need to "exclude the uncontrolled distribution of food products obtained from genetically modified plants." At the same time, Elena Sharoikina stated that in the Russian regions there is not enough technical equipment and the system of control over the spread of GMOs is not developed, there is no comprehensive legislative framework and state support for scientific research in the field of biological safety.

At the press conference, an open appeal was made to the head of the working group on the creation of an innovation center in Skolkovo, to the First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Russia Vladislav Surkov with a proposal to develop the Safe Genetic Technologies project within the framework of Silicon Valley.

The project provides for the development of a security system aimed at protecting Russian citizens from possible negative consequences of the influence of GMOs.

Transgenization is a genetic bomb

2007
Documentary
Director:
Galina Tsareva

One of the most acute problems of our time is the problem of the introduction and dissemination of new biotechnologies associated with genetic changes in living organisms. Genetically modified (transgenic) organisms contain DNA fragments from any other living organisms in their genetic apparatus, for example, insect, animal or even human genes can be inserted into a plant. With the help of genetic engineering, hybrids of potatoes with tomato, soybeans with blue tobacco, sunflowers with beans have already been obtained. There are also more discouraging data: a frost-resistant tomato variety with an embedded flounder gene, drought-resistant corn with a scorpion gene, a tomato with a toad gene. But does a person have enough knowledge to play the role of the Creator?

A special pride of our specialists is potatoes, from which the Colorado potato beetles die. For environmentalists, he is the main irritant. Experts say that when eating transgenic potatoes in rats, a change in blood composition occurs, a change in the size of internal organs, and pathologies appear in much greater numbers than when eating ordinary potatoes.

9 cotton lines

Of these, massively grown: soybeans, corn, rapeseed and cotton.

According to Rospotrebnadzor of the Russian Federation, in 2004 compared to 2003, three times more samples (12,956 samples) of food raw materials and foodstuffs were examined for the presence of genetically modified sources (GM). The largest number of samples containing GMI in absolute terms in 2004 was found in meat products - 946 (in 2003 - 272) and "other" products based on vegetable proteins - 466 (in 2003 - 129). GMIs were found in small quantities in bakery and flour-grinding products (44 samples), poultry and poultry products (29 samples), baby food (13 samples) and canned food (13 samples).

In general, foods containing GMOs can be divided into three categories:

1. Products containing GM ingredients (mainly transgenic corn and soybeans). These additives are introduced into food products as structuring, sweetening, coloring agents, and also as substances that increase the protein content.

2. Processing products of transgenic raw materials (for example, bean curd, soy milk, chips, corn flakes, tomato paste).

3. Transgenic vegetables and fruits, and soon, possibly, animals that are directly used for food.

It is also useful to remember the names of some companies that, according to the state register, supply GM raw materials to their customers in Russia or are themselves producers:

Central Soya Protein Group, Denmark;

OOO "BIOSTAR TRADE", St. Petersburg;

CJSC "Universal", Nizhny Novgorod;

Monsanto Co., USA;

Protein Technologies International Moscow, Moscow;

Agenda LLC, Moscow;

ZAO ADM-Food Products, Moscow;

JSC "GALA", Moscow;

CJSC Belok, Moscow;

Dera Food Technology N.V., Moscow;

Herbalife International of America, USA;

OY FINNSOYPRO LTD, Finland;

Salon Sport-Service LLC, Moscow;

When buying products in a store, labels can indirectly determine the likelihood of a product containing GMOs. If the label says that a product is made in the USA and contains soy, corn, canola or potatoes, there is a very good chance that it contains GM components.

Most products based on soy not produced in the US, but outside of Russia, can also be transgenic. If the proud inscription “vegetable protein” is on the label, it is most likely soy and very likely transgenic.

Often GMOs can be hidden behind E indices. However, this does not mean that all E supplements contain GMOs or are transgenic. You just need to know which E can, in principle, contain GMOs or their derivatives.

It is primarily soy lecithin or E 322 lecithin: binds water and fat together and is used as a fat element in formula milks, biscuits, chocolate, riboflavin (B2) otherwise known as E 101 and E 101A, can be produced from GM microorganisms. It is added to cereals, soft drinks, baby food and weight loss products. Caramel (E 150) and xanthan (E 415) can also be produced from GM grain.

Other additives that may contain GM components: E 153, E 160d, E 161c, E 308-9, E-471, E 472a, E 473, E 475, E 476b, E 477, E479a, E 570, E 572, E 573, E 620, E 621, E 622, E 633, E 624, E 625, E951.

Sometimes on the labels the names of additives are indicated only in words, they also need to be able to navigate. Let's take a look at the most common components.

Soybean Oil: Used in sauces, spreads, cakes and well-done foods in the form of fat to add extra flavor and quality. Vegetable oil or vegetable fats: most commonly found in biscuits, hard-fried foods such as chips. Maltodextrin: A type of starch that acts as a "master agent" used in baby food, powdered soups, and powdered desserts.

Glucose or Glucose Syrup: Sugar, which can be made from cornstarch, is used as a sweetener. Found in drinks, desserts and fast food.

Dextrose: Like glucose, it can be made from cornstarch. Used in cakes, chips and cookies to achieve brown color. Also used as a sweetener in high energy sports drinks.

Aspartame, aspasvit, aspamix: A sweetener that can be produced using a GM bacterium is restricted in several countries and is reported to have received a lot of complaints, mainly related to fainting syndrome, from consumers in the United States. Aspartame is found in carbonated water, diet sodas, chewing gum, ketchups, etc.

Many people think that the label "modified starch" on a product means that the product contains GMOs. This even led to the fact that in 2002 the Legislative Assembly of the Perm region at its meeting included yoghurts with modified starch in the list of GM products illegally distributed in the region. In fact, modified starch is obtained chemically without the use of genetic engineering. But starch itself can have a genetically engineered origin if it was obtained from GM corn, GM potatoes.

During the test, the highest percentage of GM soybeans was found in the Veal Traditional boiled sausage produced by the Cherkizovsky plant. GMIs were most often found in the products of the same manufacturer, as well as in the products of the D.E.C. V.S. company (trademark "Rollton").

Among the manufacturers whose products contain GMOs, there were also:

LLC "Daria - semi-finished products";

OOO Meat Processing Plant Klinskiy;

MPZ "Tagansky";

MPZ "Kampomos";

CJSC "Vichunai";

LLC "MLM-RA";

Tolsto-products LLC;

Ostankino MPK;

LLC “Sausage plant “Bogatyr””;

Rose Marie Ltf LLC;

ML "Mikoyanovsky";

JSC "Tsaritsyno";

JSC "Lianozovsky sausage factory"

Our favorite dumplings also turned out to be genetically modified, namely: “Dumplings without haste, pork and beef”, “Daria classic dumplings”, GMOs were found in “Vkusnye” beef steaks.

Honey can be harvested from genetically modified plants.

There is a high frequency of information that bees cannot pollinate genetically modified buckwheat. So, there is one.

Rice. In general, it is better to buy not anonymous varieties of plant products, but quite specific ones.

3. Maggi spices

4 Pringles

Vegetable counters are littered with "Volgograd" tomatoes, like twins similar to Turkish ones.

Yakusheva "What are transgenic products?":

Now 90% of transgenic food exports are corn and soybeans.

"Foods that kill you":

Some of the imported beer is also believed to contain genetically modified molecules taken over by the beer from the modified yeast.

According to the National Association for Genetic Safety, about 1/3 of all products on the Russian market contain genetically modified components.

Greenpeace Handbook "How to avoid the use of products with genetically modified ingredients (GM products)?"

The directory contains lists of food enterprises divided into three categories (green, orange and red lists) according to the criterion of the presence of GM components in products.

The New Year's menu often includes canned store-bought vegetables. But canned corn and green peas are highly undesirable.

For a complete list of companies that have confirmed that their products may contain GM ingredients or have not denied their use, see www.ecoleague.net.

“The results of the study showed that in 18 out of 42 randomly selected food products, the content of genetically modified soybeans exceeded 3 percent,” said Mikhail Mukharovskiy, General Director of Ukrmetrteststandart. “Nine of them didn’t list the presence of soy protein at all.”

Bonduel is thus blacklisted!

I understand that the accuracy of what is included in the list is not guaranteed, as the sources of information may be questionable. But otherwise, I have practically no way to keep such a list at all.

Orchard, Rich puree - genetically modified products.

By the way, the very first genetically modified product on the market is a food banana, and any one (to increase productivity, it has, roughly speaking, a duplicated set of chromosomes).

If about a banana: artificially induced polyploidy is also a form of genetic modification (because the chromosome set becomes larger compared to the original organism), most importantly, cheap and angry. But journalists have not yet learned how to scare people with it.

The Mistral company, probably, deliberately does not mark on the packs the country of growth of those cereals and legumes that are packed in them. The fact is that she "lit up" in the sale of American crops, which, most likely, are genetically modified. Not labeled "Basmati Rice" either. Unfortunately, as I only found out today, it could be transgenic with a high degree of probability. From the book Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Background of Genetic Manipulation by William F. Engdahl:

RiceTech, a Texas biotech company, has decided that it will receive patent payments for Basmati rice, a variation that has been a daily staple in India, Pakistan and Asia for thousands of years.

From the article "Transgenic Senior Tomato and Dolly the Sheep...":

You can delay the ripening of already harvested fruits by placing them in special conditions. With the help of carbon dioxide, the action of ethylene released by the fruits is blocked. These properties are manipulated by merchants carrying bananas, citrus fruits, and vegetables - and tomatoes in particular.

Excerpts from the book of Mikhail Efremov: “Caution! Harmful products!

Additives with a high degree of probability of containing GI components:

E-153 - Vegetable Carbon (vegetable coal);

E-160d - Annatto, Bixin, Norbixin (annatto, bixin, norbixin);

E-308 - Synthetic Gamma-tocopherol (synthetic y-tocopherol);

E-309 - Synthetic Delta-tocopherol (synthetic d-tocopherol);

E-471 - Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids);

E-472a - Acetic Acid Esters of Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids (esters of mono- and diglycerides of acetic fatty acids);

E-473 - Sucrose Esters of Fatty Acids (esters of sucrose and fatty acids);

E-475 - Polyglycerol Esters of Fatty Acids (esters of polyglycerides and fatty acids);

E-476 - Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate (polyglycerol polyglycerinoleates);

E-477 - Propane-1, 2-diol Esters of Fatty Acids (propane-1, 2-diol esters of fatty acids);

E-479b - Thermally Oxideized Soya Bean Oll Interacted with Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids

E-570 - Fatty Acids (fatty acids);

E-951 - Aspartame (aspartame, or nutrosvit).

Additives based on GM components:

Riboflavin (B2) otherwise known as E 101 and E 101A, made from GM microorganisms, is approved for sale in a number of countries. It is added to cereals, soft drinks, baby food and weight loss products. Caramel (E 150) and xanthan (E 415) can be made from grain.

Lecithin (E 322) is produced from soy, which can be genetically modified. Such soy is used, in particular, by the Neslte company in its chocolate, baby food and other products. Other additives that may contain GM components: E 153, E 160 d, E 161 c, E 308-9, E-471, E 472a, E 473, E 475, E 476 b, E 477, E479 a, E 570, E 572, E 573, E 620, E 621, E 622, E 633, E 624, E 625.

I emphasize that food additives for any purpose (technological, to "improve" consumer qualities) can be included in dietary supplements as well. Therefore, it is important to know which of the food additives are prohibited or dangerous.

I saw how dairy production works. Only milk after that is not very desirable to drink.

And only raw cow's milk can be consumed. You can make yogurt from the store, and not from anyone, but preferably from the one on which it is written that it is made from natural (whole) cow's milk (its fat content is usually indicated as 3.4-6%). Drinking such milk in its pure form is not worth it, because it is pasteurized and with its regular use, after a while, the joints will start to hurt - most likely due to the deposition of inorganic calcium in them, which appears during pasteurization (it passes from an organically bound form to an inorganic one) . But you can make yogurt out of it - it turns out quite well and does not cause problems.

But any milk normalized for fat content is a real poison. And even yogurt from such milk turns out to be unimportant, except that from milk with a fat content of no more than 1% - lactobacilli at the very least cope with such concentrations of modified milk fat.

into his body. In supermarkets, this is the situation now: absolutely all products are labeled ''GMO-free''. We read the composition on the label: modified soy, modified starch, and so on.
