As I learned from a smart book, according to naturalness, beer can be of 5 categories: A) freshly brewed, B) filtered, i.e. draft from kegs, C) bottle pasteurized (shelf life is less than 3 months), D) bottle stabilized (shelf life is more than 3 months), E) canned, with the addition of preservatives and antioxidants. So, starting from category D, the liquid contained in the containers is no longer beer - rather, it is an alcohol-containing soda with a yeasty taste. At the same time, any, even the most famous brand, can be drawn on the bottle / jar - such a label does not affect the quality of the contents. This is the alcohol-containing liquid we usually drink instead of beer. Rumbling in the stomach and a heavy head in the morning are guaranteed even from one liter, and with large doses there is a considerable risk of earning food poisoning (superimposed on a hangover, but not a hangover).

To drink beer, you either need to find bottles with category B in the trade (periodically, such beer goes on sale, apparently due to an oversight of "effective managers"; for example, now I drink the Russian dark "Velikopopovitsky goat", and a few years ago this category was approaching "Chepetskoye"), or go to a bar and pay 150-200 rubles for a mug in the hope of category B (and without any guarantee, because beer in kegs from Perm restaurateurs periodically turns sour). After returning, the puffs were over, and I used the Internet access to systematize the knowledge gained in Prague pubs. It turned out (who would have thought) that in the Czech brewing industry everything is the same as everywhere else - privatization, buying up enterprises by world capital, takeovers of competitors and even a decrease in the quality of beer in pursuit of profit.

Major beer producers and their beer brands:
1) Pilsen Prazdroj - Prazdroj (since 1998 - Pilsner Urkuell), Gambrinus, Velkepopovitsky goat, Radegast.

It was only after compiling this list that I realized why, among the hundreds of drinking establishments in Prague marked with round labels of the brand of beer served in them, I never met a merchant selling the Velkepopovice Kozl. It turns out that "Kozel" belongs to the Pilsen Festival, which promotes its main brand everywhere - Pilsen = Pilsen Festival (as it is called on the menu) = Pilsner Urquell (as it is called on the signs). I saw light "Kozel" in Prague exclusively in bottles, dark - as an additional beer in the menu of "Pilsen" establishments.

3. Progress report

Having received my luggage, I rushed to the nearest bar with a Pilsner Urquell sign, but was stopped by the guide who met us: "Crazy! It's insanely expensive here!" Let's start with prices. In November 2008, the exchange rate of the Czech crown was 19 kroons per dollar, the exchange rate of the ruble was approximately 28, so on average we can assume that 1 kroon = 1.5 rubles. So, "insanely expensive" at the airport was beer at 135 crowns for a half-liter mug, which is 200 rubles - the average price of such a mug (by volume, not by quality!) in Perm. After walking around Prague for a couple of days, I got a rough idea of ​​the beer prices there:

Pretentious and tourist establishments (such as a bar near St. Vitus Cathedral or on a steamboat floating along the Vltava) - 100 kroons
First-class institutions in the center (such as the popular among Russians "At the Chalice") - 60 kroons
First-class establishments on the outskirts (our favorite restaurant "At the White Lion") - 30 kroons
Just beer bars - 22 crowns (I haven't seen cheaper)
Bottled beer - from 6 crowns (Branik, the cheapest variety).

As you can see, the price does not depend on the quality of beer (as in Russia), but solely on the status of the institution - the level of service and proximity to tourist clusters. So I can say with full responsibility: for a beer alcoholic, Prague is simply heaven on Earth. Cheap, tasty, varied, in a pleasant environment - what else to dream of?

Now about where to drink beer in Prague. The travel company Amigo Tur provided us with a map of Prague with a Russian-language application, which listed the main pathos pubs - a kind of "obligatory program" for tourists. Here we will start with it:

At the bowl (U Kalicha)- an institution that all admirers of the good soldier Schweik know about. I read it on the Web - they say, it is popular among tourists, you can’t get in without an appointment. In fact, it turned out differently - Sunday, 5 pm, an absolutely empty hall.

True, Japanese tourists were brought in ten minutes later, so there is a chance that the restaurant will not burn out. The menu could not be tried, because. came from the neighboring restaurant "Pivovarsky Dom", but the Plzensky Feast was served very worthy. In general - a place where I would look again, try the cuisine.

U Fleku- is positioned as an institution in the old style, with its own beer. The presence of your own beer is immediately visible - at the entrance there is a kiosk with empty plastic bottles for takeaway. Inside, in the very first room, a suffocating concentration of tobacco smoke was found, a drunken crowd sitting at long tables and a certain man playing "Suglyanka-Moldavianka" on the button accordion. I still had enough to read the menu, but when I found only 1 (one) type of beer in it - local light - and a waiter passing by slammed a mug with dark, my patience snapped, and the restaurant was abandoned.

At St. Thomas (U Sv. Tomase)- is advertised as the oldest pub in Prague, known since 1358. However, we failed to find it at the address indicated in the guide - Letenska, 12. We crossed the street twice, carefully sniffed a piece of the monastery wall with number 12, even went inside the Wallenstein Garden and photographed the famous peacocks there. It is useless - the pub was never found. Wonder what I did wrong?

Novomestsky Pivovar- a pub, where the guide sent us as a group immediately after the first tour. However, back in Perm we were warned that this is a tourist establishment, and tourists steal everything for the sake of exoticism, and therefore you should not go there, but you should go a few blocks further and get to the Brewery House, where there is also beer, but at least not only for tourists . Therefore, the Novomestsky brewer remained unexplored - who has been, tell us how it is?

Castle Brewery Detenice- included as an additional excursion in the Amigo Tour programs, 50 euros per nose, and is a comprehensive service according to the "do not like it, do not eat, but money in advance" scheme. At the castle (a castle in the Czech Republic is any stone house with a park and history), a long two-story building was built, inside stylized as a medieval tavern.

Beer, to tell the truth, is no better than the similar Perm one (beer restaurant "Ersh") - the location of the brewery in the Czech Republic alone is not enough for quality. The main feature is an entertainment program, consisting of a dramatization on the theme of "Pirates of the Caribbean", catching in the hall and interrogating the "witch", as well as a performance by a fire-eater. The dramatizations are in Czech, so I didn’t understand anything, and I couldn’t fill the boredom with beer because of its very bad quality. In a word, I didn’t like it, I would have found a much better use for my 50 euros. The wife, on the other hand, was very pleased, until the dancer, dancing according to the old custom on the table, knocked over a candle on her jeans and filled them with wax. In a word, the Middle Ages in full growth.

Well, now about our own discoveries. Unlike places of worship, here everything was tasty and pleasant.

Brewery house (Pivovarsky dum) Found on a tip from our friend as a place to try miscellaneous beer. But by "different" I meant different brands (Pilsen, Budweiser, Kozel, Krušovice, etc.), and in the Brewery Dom they serve different kinds beer - light, dark, nettle, coffee, cherry and so on. The menu provides a special tasting set - 8 glasses with all the varieties produced, which I immediately ordered:


The kitchen in the restaurant is on the level; for those who want not to show off, but just drink beer, the company provides a "beer giraffe" - a high cylinder of 4 liters (at a price of 3.5), inserted into a special stand with a tap, from where everyone pours as much as he wants. For cold weather (we had November), a beer grog is very useful. The prices are moderate - a check for two is 612 CZK (this is dinner plus beer plus tasting). In a word, I recommend.

At the White Lion (U Bileho Lva) We just went for a walk in the vicinity of the Wilhelm Hotel, went in - and immediately liked it. Delicious cuisine, Krusovice beer (I note that it turned out to be light much better than the dark one!) for 29 crowns per mug, a free bread basket, excellent decoration and the opportunity to enjoy, though not Czech, but still delicious Guinness - what else do you need to have a peaceful dinner in your neighborhood? It is not surprising that both times when we looked into the restaurant, 2 places were difficult for us - most of the tables were occupied, and Czechs, not tourists. Check for two - 361 and 450 crowns (dinner plus beer, second time with Guinness).

Shot goose (Potrefena husa) This is a real gem of Czech beer and Czech cuisine! If it were not for the recommendation of the Amigo Tur guide Ms. Rendlova, we would not even know about him - there are hundreds of restaurants and cafes in Prague, by typing you get only to just good establishments. But "Gus", which is the branded restaurant chain Staropramen, combines a large selection of beer ( all Staropramen products for bottling), great food (they say the best "baked boar knee" in the White Lion, so, this is only for those who have not tried it in Gus!) and low prices (check for two dinner + beer + tasting - 594 crowns).

Only here we managed to taste the softest, "ladies'" beer Staropramen Velvet - a masterpiece of Czech brewing, surpassing even the original Guinness in softness of taste. After Velvet, even Prazdroy seems watery and somehow fake, so the prize for "the best beer in the world according to Shcheglov" goes to him. Summary - must visit, at least to have something to compare with.

As a result of the trip to Prague, my personal rating has changed somewhat. So, if I were in a famous Dublin bar with over 1,000 brands of beer, I would order myself a beer in the following sequence:
1) Staropramen Velvet
2) Guinness
3-4) Pilsen Prazdroy, aka Pilsner Urquell
3-4) Budweiser Budvar
5) Krusovice light
6) Velkopopovitsky goat dark

And as a bonus - an example bottled beer, which turned out to be even better than the dark Velkopopovitsky goat. Meet the dark beer Lobkowicz, brewed and bottled in the brewery of the Nelahozewiec castle, privately owned by these same Lobkowicz.

The tastiest (Guinness will be leaner) and soft (Velkopopovitsky goat is much more bitter) dark beer that I have ever tasted in my life. I draw your attention: I tried it from a bottle, from this very bottle. But - it is sold only in the castle and in the vicinity, in Prague I simply did not see it in stores. Good - little by little!
